Year 6

What’s Happening in Year 6?

It’s been a busy and exciting time in Year 6!

We’ve just wrapped up our unit on The Enlightenment—a time full of big ideas and important thinkers like John Locke and Voltaire. Now, we’re looking at how some of their ideas connect to how the Australian government works today. It’s been great to see students making real-world links between history and how we live now.

In writing, we’re working on narratives and using some great techniques to bring our stories to life—like Tier 2 vocabulary, pairs of adjectives, and direct speech. The creativity in the room has been fantastic, and we’re seeing some exciting stories take shape!

In Maths, we’ve been learning all about perimeter and area. We’re using formulas and solving worded problems to show what we know and how we can apply it in different situations.

We’re also continuing to build our AUSLAN skills as we read The Rabbits by Shaun Tan and John Marsden. It’s a powerful book, and we’re working hard on a signed performance of the story to share with the school. We’ll be performing it by the end of term—so keep an eye out for the assembly date coming soon!

We have also loved lots of time with our buddies lately, even helping to read questions to them in their maths test this week!

Here’s a recap of some events by our students:

On the 20th of May the Year 6 netball Team went to Romsey to compete in winter sports with the following players Lawson, Hunter, Ella, Liv, Chelsea, Grace, Mikayla, Zoe and Sophie. We played 6 games and had success in all 6, by the end we were tied with another school causing a game to grow more stressful by the minutes. After a long stressful time the scores were 3 to 4, our team grew and became successful with the help of our coach (Jaclyn) and the football team cheering us on from the sidelines. We had a joyful and fun day and can’t wait to move on. Thank you to all the other teams that participated in the amazing experience and helped our team grow and experience an unforgettable day.

We look forward to travelling to Castlemaine in a few weeks for the next stage!

Last week on Wednesday our school and 2,204,698 other people joined a live stream to read a book called The Truck Cat with the Author Deborah Frenkel and the Illustrator Danny Snell. The book was lovely and the illustrations were amazing. The book was about a cat named Tinker and a man named Yacoub travelling in a truck around the country but one day Tinker chased a butterfly and almost got hit by a car but a lady. Yacoub and the lady fell in love and then moved in together and the Tinker realised home is everywhere. After the Illustrator helped us draw a cat in the style of Tinker.

On the 20th of May Darcy, Harriette, Bailey, Lachlan, Arturo, Zach, Oakley, Lukas and Levi (all year 6) hit the Romsey oval to play some interschool footy. We played some friendly footy against Romsey, St Marys, Candlebark, Kyneton, Woodend and Newham. We lost every game, but we had lots of fun going against other schools. Travis was our coach and our assistant coach Brayden. We thank them for taking control when Meagan was absent. We also would like to thank all the teachers who came to watch and help.
