Year 1

It’s been a jam-packed few weeks in 1C, as we’ve been travelling back in time, solving maths mysteries, and even brushing up on our ancient laws (spoiler alert: King Hammurabi didn’t mess around!).

In Reading, we’ve wrapped up our deep dive into Ancient Mesopotamia—a time where people didn’t just pop down to the shops but relied on their communities for everything! We explored the very first form of writing (called cuneiform), uncovered the important roles of kings, queens, and the often strict rules they enforced and even discussed a few Mesopotamian gods and goddesses along the way. The students have absolutely blown me away with how much they’ve remembered and how thoughtfully they’ve discussed these ancient wonders. Next stop: dinosaurs, fossils, and the history of the Earth. Yes, it’s going to rock! (Geology pun intended.)

In Writing, our class has been turning all that ancient knowledge into well-crafted sentences. We’ve worked hard on using verbs, adjectives and punctuation and have also been learning to tell the difference between a sentence and a question. Now, we’re taking all that learning and turning it into full information reports—with planning, drafting, and publishing underway.

Maths has been all about place value and thinking flexibly with numbers. We’ve used part-part-whole models and number bonds to break apart numbers like real mathematicians. We've also dipped our toes into basic addition (without symbols) to prepare for introducing the plus and equals signs soon. On top of that, we’ve become mini statisticians—collecting data using tally marks and picture graphs and learning to answer questions based on our results.

In Wellbeing, we’ve explored the first two Keys to Communication—focusing on using talking voices and expressing ourselves kindly and clearly. Whether we’re asking for a turn or explaining our feelings, we’re learning how to communicate with care—and it shows in our classroom community every day.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support. We can’t wait to show you what we learn next!
