STEM
The year is absolutely flying by and we have been so busy learning about a heap of different science topics this term. The start of the term had us conducting some germ experiments of pieces of bread in the attempt to grow some mould. Our results were varied but we could very clearly see the difference in the mould growth on a piece of bread handled by our clean hands compared to our unwashed hands. It definitely gave us lots of food for thought about how important thorough hand washing is!
We then moved on to looking at our place in space with Preps learning about the four seasons, Year 1s looking at phases of the moon and the 2/3s researching and creating constellations. The senior students researched setting up a research station on the Moon and learnt about suitable building materials in space.
Week 4 brought us to looking at the human body, from the five senses in Prep, to major organs and bones in the middle school and learning about how our bodies react in the senior school - this activity was a firm favourite with some surprising results!
In Week 5 we delved into the world of animals with Preps learning about living and non-living things. Year 1s learnt about great animal migrations and why animals migrate. The 2/3s researched their favourite animals using our non-fiction library and presented to their classmates and the senior students chose a habitat to research and create a presentation on.
Week 6 was the start of our Design Technology component of STEM and our junior students used paper to weave designs and our senior students used wool to weave on cardboard looms. Thanks to all who donated their wool for this purpose!
