Co-curricular - Senior Sport

Students participating in sports is an integral part of the cultural here at the College, and the joys of playing sports are undeniable. Whether you're in the Firsts or a casual participant, sports offer a unique blend of physical, mental, and social benefits that can enrich your sons’ experiences during their time here at SPC.

Playing sports is also a social endeavour that brings students together and promotes strong bonds. While we are early into the Summer season, I have recently witnessed the camaraderie, trust, and teamwork of our teams on Saturday during their fixtures, and it’s a pleasure to watch. However, it saddens me to receive reports of our community’s poor behaviour towards some officials.

Respecting referees in sport is not only a fundamental aspect of good sportsmanship but also crucial for maintaining the integrity and fairness of any game. Referees play a vital role in ensuring that the games we love can be played - “without them there is no game”.

Respecting referees sets a positive example for athletes, coaches, and spectators alike. It promotes an environment where disagreements and disputes are handled with maturity and good behaviour rather than aggression or hostility. Disregarding and arguing with a referee's decision can lead to chaos on the field/court, diminishing the enjoyment of the game for everyone involved.

Moreover, referees are human and, like anyone else, can make mistakes. However, it's important to remember that they make split-second decisions under immense pressure. It is becoming increasingly harder to find people willing to referee/umpire these days. Showing respect, even in the face of disagreement, acknowledges one’s dedication and contribution to the sport. A reminder that we're all in the game together, striving for excellence while upholding the values that sports teach us.

I wish to invite any parent/carer, student or friend of the community who would be interested in becoming a match day official for any of our Summer or Winter sports to please fill in the form via the link below. Should there be adequate numbers, the College is willing to arrange referee courses for those interested to participate in.
