Principal's Report

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your contribution to McCarthy Catholic College this year. I particularly thank those who assisted our goals of lifting learning culture and improving student care by supporting the work of staff, supporting the learning and wellbeing of students, and generally being prepared to stand up and contribute positively to McCarthy Catholic College.

On a personal note, thank you for your support over the three years I have been principal at McCarthy. It has been a very satisfying time, working with families, students and staff on the constant work of school improvement. Carmel and I are returning to Wagga Wagga, though I will continue to work for the Diocese part-time during 2024. Carmel passes on her thanks and appreciation to the many students and families she encountered in her three days a week at McCarthy.

Incoming principal Michael Whitton has been at McCarthy for the last three weeks working with staff, students and parents so that he begins 2024 familiar with the College and College community. It has been an enjoyable and productive time and the decision to organise a month with both of us here was a very sound one by the CSO. I know you will welcome Michael and appreciate the experience and expertise he brings to the best job in a school.

A significant number of students took more care of others and paid more attention to their learning this year and schools improve when this happens. Thank you to the improvers.

I thank staff for their committed contribution this year, wish well those who are leaving and wish a relaxing break to those returning to continue the work next year.

Creative Arts Leader of Learning Donna Swan leaves us for the same position at St Paul’s College in Kempsey. Tracey Bradbery is retiring after 28 years of service to the College. Leader of Pedagogy, Briony Martin is joining the CSO full time after splitting her work between the CSO and McCarthy this year. Isaac Carr also joins the CSO early next year. Abbie Wakely, James Harrison, Jekoya Nash and Kelly O’Gorman have completed their gap year and are off to university. Hamish Sparke and Liam Ball (for the second time) leave us after a short-term contract.

Thank you and good luck to students who are leaving for other towns and schools. Please let me know if there are any late moves so that we can offer places to families that have inquired about enrolling in 2024. Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are currently full. Year 11 and 12 enrolments depend on subject combinations and availability.

I hope the Christmas break is prayerful, enjoyable and fulfilling for each of you and I wish you well in the starting of it all again, next year.

And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."

Thank you again for your contribution to McCarthy Catholic College in 2023. Congratulations, Merry Christmas and all the best.

All the best,

Rod Whelan

Principal

Dear Families,

I hope this message finds you well and filled with excitement for the upcoming school year. My name is Michael Whitton, and I am delighted to introduce myself as Principal. As we embark on this educational journey together, I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about myself and express my enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with you and your wonderful children.

For those of you who may not have had the chance to meet me yet, I come to McCarthy with a passion for education and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with diverse groups of students, and each experience has enriched my understanding of the unique qualities and potential that each child brings to the classroom.

My educational philosophy centers around creating a supportive and engaging atmosphere where students feel safe, valued and empowered to explore their curiosity.

Communication is key to a successful partnership between school and families, and I am dedicated to maintaining an open line of dialogue. We are a team, and by working together, we can create a safe and supportive network that contributes to your child's growth and success.

I am genuinely excited about the upcoming school year and the opportunities it holds for each student. I encourage you to join me in fostering a love for learning and exploration in your child's life. Let's make this a year of curiosity, discovery, and achievement!

If you have any specific questions or if there's anything you'd like to discuss further, please feel free to reach out to me via the school office. I am looking forward to a fantastic year filled with learning, growth, and memorable experiences.
