Our scientific journey of Chemicals

LI: To investigate how chemicals changes can occur with food.

In 5C, we have been learning lots in Inquiry. One of the main experiments we are doing is trying to find which type of bread will grow mould first. The 4 types of bread we are comparing are Sourdough, Gluten free bread, McDonald’s bun bread, and White bread. We had 3 samples of each bread, and 2 samples of each bread are in different places to see which ones would grow mould first. We put the rest of the samples on a white board. Some of the places we kept the bread are in dark places or sticking them to windows with direct sunlight. Everyday for the rest of the week, we will be checking on the breads to see if they grow mould.

Our Inquiry question is ‘How do business and consumer choices about the use of chemicals in products impact the world around us?’  We are learning about this because we want to investigate chemicals are used around us, business and consumer behaviours and consolidate our knowledge of the Scientific Method. To add on to this, we are also investigating the different food chemicals inside of foods, and why after a while the food goes mouldy. We are all very excited to continue this amazing learning journey!
