Principal's Report

By Frank Catalano

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

Welcome to the first newsletter for Term Four and I trust everyone has had a fabulous school holiday break.

As per usual, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to see me at school, or contact me on 9802 9938 or frank.catalano@education.vic.edu.au.

I always find the beginning of a new term extremely exciting as the children and staff share their holiday stories with so much enthusiasm and joy. Regardless of what everyone ‘got up to’ the real issue is that the children and staff have returned to school with a ‘bounce in their step’ and are now ready for a new term of learning.

As per usual there are so many things planned for our school community, may I encourage you to diarise events by scrolling through the “Important Dates for Your Diary” section within our newsletter.

Welcome to the following new students.

May I extend a very warm welcome to the following new children and their families to the Glen Waverley PS family:

Year 2: Aarav

Year 4: Liya and Kelly

Year 5: Eshali

Year 6: Angela

Facilities Update

As you would be aware, the school holidays are the ideal to time have tasks completed and throughout the recent break the following projects were completed:

  • Cover over the basketball court – as communicated via a Compass Post last week, I am thrilled that this project has finally been completed as it has been an 18-month journey to get to this stage. The final product is simply amazing and will serve our school community for many years to come. One of the highlights for me was observing the looks on the children’s, parents ‘and staff’s faces when they saw the structure for the first time! Once again, thank you everyone as your contributions have been pivotal in ensuring this facilities upgrade was completed.

  • Asphalt at the front of the school –  this was replaced as it was worn and cracked. Please note the new line marking particularly the 5 – minute parking in between 8am and 9:30am and 2:30pm and 4pm.

  • New fence – a new fence was installed behind the Year 3 and 4 adventure playground.
  • The floor leading to the children’s bathroom was painted and

  • Maintenance works – were completed on the school oval.

Once again, thank you everyone as your contribution to our school’s Building Fund and the Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA – basketball court) as your support has been instrumental in ensuring these projects are completed.

Mid-Autumn Festival Lunch

On the final day of Term Three, our school’s Chinese families invited the staff to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival by hosting a very special lunch. Historically this festival is a celebration that was used by Ancient Chinese emperors to pray for the harvest, fine weather and peace for the country. As the harvest was tied to the moon cycle, the festival is meant to take place when the moon is at its fullest.

Today, the festival is used to celebrate peace, togetherness and community. From the staff’s perspective we were thrilled to be invited as we all had the opportunity to celebrate coming together as a school community. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend as your spirit of generosity is appreciated immensely. Below is a speech read by Haley:

Good afternoon, Mr Catalano, staff, and parents.

I am Owen and Oscar’s mum. It is my honour to stand here to celebrate the Chinese traditional festival with you all and to speak on behalf of the parents of Chinese families in our school community.

First of all, I would like to thank the school for creating a Chinese community, which has built an effective communication platform for our Chinese parents. Now we have 130 Chinese parents in this group, and it feels like a big family. I would also like to thank Mr. Catalano for his support and recognition of the Chinese community.

Moreover, I would like to thank the teachers and all the staff who have supported our children to adapt to school life and studies, letting them have a fun and healthy environment to grow. Every time I pass the classroom, I always see the children learning happily under the guidance of the teachers. How much they have achieved and grown is the result of your hard-work and effort. Once again, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to you.

The 10th of September is the Teacher’s Day in China. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all teachers a happy Teacher’s Day! I wish everyone a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Thank you to the Ekanayake Family

Thak you to the Ekanayake family for their very kind donation of some cricket pads and a bat which will be used to supplement our school’s sporting resources. Included is a photograph of Nuvee and Neili with the new resources. Thank you very much Gayan, Dulnima, Ruhein, Nuvee and Neili!

World Teacher Day - 5th October

Last week we celebrated World Teachers' Day with a special morning tea for staff.

This year's theme, "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage," reminds us of the critical role each one of our staff have in making our school successful. I would personally like to congratulate all staff for your commitment, passion, and tireless efforts.

We received a touching piece written by three of our Year 6 students – Aayat, Ileesha, and Snigdha in 6F. Their words beautifully capture the impact our staff have on our school and the lives of the children and their families. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as i did. Please refer to their piece in the newsletter.
