Level 5 & 6 Wonga Weekly

Week 3, Term 4

🌿 READING AND VIEWING

Students are beginning a new novel or short story to study throughout the Term. They will complete tasks related to their texts to help them to understand how the author establishes character, setting and main themes.

🪴What you can do at home:

We encourage your child to read independently as often as possible. Discuss with your child different stories they have read and take note of how the characters have dealt with the problems that arise in these stories.

🌿 WRITING

Using planning and idea generation strategies, which have been developed over previous weeks, students will build a short story following an author's process. They will document this process on their iPad alongside the development of this story.

🪴What you can do at home:

Throughout the week, look at and discuss your child's keynote to see how their story is progressing.

🌿 SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

This week our spelling focus is suffixes. Students will identify the correct use of specific suffixes and understand their meanings and origins.

🌿 MATHS

Grade 5:Students will be rounding whole and decimal numbers and apply this knowledge to using estimation to check calculations.

Grade 6:Students are applying their knowledge on the order of operations using BODMAS in equations. They will also investigate positive and negative numbers and their application to addition and subtraction problems.

🪴What you can do at home:

We encourage students to use Mathletics to further develop their skills and understanding of the areas of maths outlined above.

🌿 CBL

🌱 Our Big Idea for Term Four is 'Discovery'.

🪴Our Essential Question is:

🌏 In what ways can digital technologies improve our lives?

🪴Our Guiding Questions are:

🌏 How have the discoveries of digital technologies changed the world?

🌏 How do the positive impacts of digital technologies compared with the negative impacts?

🌱 Students will be exploring a new coding language this week through an app called 'Playgrounds'. This will allow them to create a system of coding instructions for a program to carry specific steps.

🌿 HOMEWORK

In addition to reading four times a week for at least 20 minutes, Mathletics and 'What you can do at home' recommendations above, this term:

🌱 Grade 5: Students have received their fourth 'Buddy Bag' task last week. Please support your child in working towards completing this.

🌱 Grade 6: Students have been given information to begin work on their 'Memory Book'. You should have received an email with information and a timeline. This information is also here:
