Year 2 - Mathematics

Maths In Action
This term, the Year 2 students have been actively consolidating their understanding of mathematical concepts and applying their learning through engaging, hands-on activities.
Place Value
Students deepen their understanding of place value, recognising how numbers are structured by regrouping and renaming three-digit numbers. This helped students to see the value of each digit depending on its position.
Additive Thinking - Subtraction
There was a focus on subtraction. Students explored and practised a variety of strategies, including the bar model, jump strategy using a numberline and partitioning to build their bank of problem solving strategies. This allowed them to explain their mathematical thinking and became more confident in selecting the strategy that best suits them.
Patterns
Students investigated additive (growing) patterns and learnt to identify and continue missing elements in a sequence. They were challenged to use their creativity to create different patterns for their peers to solve or continue the sequence. Here are some pictures of students creating of additive (growing) patterns.
Location
Students explored location and directional language. They applied their understanding to real-world scenarios, such as giving and following directions. They also learned about maps, how to read simple coordinate grids, and how to use positional language to describe the location of objects. These languages include turn left, right, clockwise, anticlockwise and quarter turns.
