The Year 7 leadership team is incredibly proud of how our students have embraced and demonstrated our school values of connection, respect, and growth throughout the term. Whether participating in events like the Big Freeze Fundraiser, the House Athletics Carnival, or interschool sports, our students have consistently shown resilience, teamwork, and a genuine commitment to supporting one another. Seeing them build friendships, show respect for peers and staff, and step up as leaders who contribute to making our school a safe and welcoming place for all has been inspiring. Their enthusiasm for creating activities that enhance the school community reflects their growth, and we look forward to seeing them continue to thrive in the months ahead.

As part of our emphasis on developing our future leaders, below are the reflections on Term 2 of some Year 7 SRC members. Working with our SRC team throughout the term has been a great privilege, shaping a positive schooling experience for our Year 7 cohort.

Rylan de Heer, Wellbeing Leader

Some of the events that have been taken place this term was the Big Freeze Fundraiser and Annual Leonie McGinley Music Festival. Some of the exciting activities that we were able to partake in was IDAHOBIT Day and House Athletics at the start of the term. During House Athletics, I saw people showing great sportsmanship and respect for others, even during tough challenges, which also shown growth in resilience and connection to other peers. I am looking forward to working on / creating special activities for the Year 7 Learning Area. I feel that helping / creating activities can help make this school a better place for the people who need it most. I’m also looking forward to making sure everyone feels comfortable and safe during Recess / Lunch and in the school in general.

Jack Payne, 702 Homegroup Leader

This term in sport has been an exciting and eventful one some of the events that have taken place are boys interschool sport footy, netball and soccer girls interschool sport footy and netball. Some exciting activities were school athletics day and cross country. I saw everyone being respectful on the athletics day and everyone at the interschool sport netball was improving from the start of the day. I am looking forward to the next level of all the interschool sports.

Elladora Williams, 703 Homegroup Leader

This Term we did a House Sports Athletic Carnival where we played different sports and got to be more active, made new friends and help us be more social. I am hoping that we can do more excursions just like the House Sports Athletic Carnival. We also did a Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Fundraiser which was a fundraiser to show support to other MND patients and to possibly help scientists slow down or even cure MND

Year 8 Newsletter Article

As the Year 8 Leadership Team, we are delighted to acknowledge the many ways our students have shown Connection, Respect, and Growth during Term 2. This term has been filled with opportunities for students to challenge themselves, support their peers, and contribute to our positive school culture. From the excitement of Bayview Adventure Camp, where friendships were strengthened and new bonds formed, to the energy and teamwork displayed at the House Athletics Carnival and interschool sports, our Year 8s have represented Koo Wee Rup Secondary College with pride. The generosity and commitment shown through fundraising efforts, particularly the incredible contribution to the Very Special Kids Treadmill Challenge, highlight the compassion and leadership within this year level. It has also been inspiring to see so many students involved in music, performing arts, and sustainability projects, all while upholding our shared values in and out of the classroom. We are confident our Year 8 students will continue to build on these achievements as they take on new challenges in the terms ahead.

Year 8 - Student Reflections

Mason Power - Year level leader

As one of the Year 8 student level leaders for 2025, we welcomed our new Year 8 level leader, Mr Burrows to the team this term. Over the course of this term a lot of things have happened, Year 8’s getting their new locker bay, which it is great to see that everyone has been respecting the locker bay, keeping it clean, etc. Some activities this term included Bayview Adventure Camp in Grantville, the Athletics Carnival held at Casey Fields with Bass winning with a total of 2467 house points. Some fundraisers that happened this term include the Big Freeze MND fundraiser, and a special fundraising effort with the help of some year 8 students helped raise over $34,000  by taking part in the Very Special Kids Treadmill Challenge.

Kyran Clarken - Year level leader

Throughout Term 2 there have been number of events, but the most exciting one was camp. The year 8’s went to Bayview Adventure camp where we participated in a lot of new and interesting activities, but also where we made new relationships. During our time there, every year 8 student represented either one or more of our school values, and they are Connection, Respect, and Growth. I look forward to the year 8’s keeping their positive mindsets, but also demonstrating our school values on and off the school grounds.

Syieve Smith - 801 Captain

This term has been filled with engaging events and activities that have enriched our school community. The Music Festival showcased student talent and fostered school spirit, while the Big Freeze event combined fun with a charitable cause. The Year 8 Camp provided opportunities for personal growth and team building, as highlighted by Mason and Kyran. The commencement of the musical production has been an exciting development, with students actively participating and contributing creatively. The Pond Tiddilik Home of Sustainability exemplifies our commitment to environmental health, with students actively involved in enhancing our surroundings. Observations of students consistently demonstrating the core values of Connection, Growth, and Respect are commendable, contributing to a positive and respectful school environment. Anticipation is building for the upcoming musical production and assemblies, with students working towards recognition and awards, reflecting a commitment to excellence and a proactive approach to achievement. This term has been a testament to our school's dedication to fostering a supportive and dynamic learning environment.

Nylah Christodoulou - 802 captain

Throughout the first semester, there has been many lovely events! We've had things such as camp, fundraisers and many fun events! I haven't had any problems with my position as its a very calm class to be in. My class as 802, have been a lovely group of students who represent our school in a kind manner and don't bring dishonour to the school name and treat the grounds fairly.

Georgie Fechner - 804 captain

This term has been packed with exciting events and memorable experiences. One of the highlights was when the year 8 girls softball team making it all the way to the state level. It was such a proud moment for the schools. Both girls and boy football team make it through to the next round which showed how much talent and teamwork the school has. House athletics was a blast with everyone cheering each other on and giving their best. During these activities, the school really showed our values and by building strong connections by supporting each other, showing respect through good sportsmanship and demonstrated growth by challenging ourselves and improving in every event. I’m looking forwards to the rest of the year with the next stage of our competition.

Brodie Field-Och - 806 captain

This semester has been such a fun one; there have been many sporting events such as swimming, athletics, cricket, netball, tennis, and many more. This shows lots of growth in everyone’s sports skills. I am looking forward to the many other sporting events, such as basketball, and just seeing how far Koo Wee Rup Secondary College can go with sport.

Mia Lakatos - 807 captain

In term 2, from my point of view as a home group captain I have helped somebody when they felt down. Helping people will always be an instinct for me. This term has involved some very fun events. A very fun and important event that happened during term 2 was the 57TH Annual Leonie McGinley Music Festival. This music festival took lots of hard work and many weeks to prepare for. On the night of the music festival all the 4 house colours had great spirit. At the end of the night’s performance the final scores came very close with only a 1-point difference between 1ST and 2ND. The winner of the 57TH Annual Leonie McGinley Music Festival was BASS! There was also another award that was given that night, which was the house spiritual award that was presented to FLINDERS! Another event that was held was the year 8 camp that was at the Bayview Adventure Camp in Grantville. My favourite activities at camp included the giant swing, canoeing, and crate-stacking. My last event that I’m going to talk about, that I was a part of, was the year 8 girls’ soccer team. We played three games, and we tied the first game, 0 to 0, then we lost the second game, 1 to 0 and lastly, we tied our last game, 0 to 0 again. It was an enjoyment to play soccer with the girls. My favourite part of term 2 would be hard to pick, however I would say any of these 3 events!!!!

Addie Sagocsoc - Sustainability captain

During my experience throughout this term I have noticed how students and staff have been increasingly comfortable and engaging in the way they talk to one another. From teachers sharing laughter to students, I would never imagine speaking to each other hanging out with other friend groups. It seems this connection is growing larger by the month. I’ve seen this happening mostly in PE when a classmate or I are cheering on another student I hardly ever talked to. It truly surprised me, and it has only increased after year 8’s camp as I have too found a friend group I have never thought was possible with me in it.

It brightens my day every time I’m reminded that we are a step closer to this value of connection.

Abi Chaffey - Performing Arts captain

In the area of the Music Department, we have had a few performances, appearances and exciting activities throughout this term. Starting with ANZAC Day our colleges Senior Band marched in the city in amongst 10,000 people. Following that we had the 57th annual Leonie McGinley Music Festival where the four houses battled it out in a competition with singing, dancing and some mini musicals created by the houses. Over the last two months we have begun the rehearsals for Shrek the Musical and can’t wait to perform to everyone at the end of August. Through this term we had a band performance from our intermediate band. Then on Friday the 27th of June our Senior Band caught a bus to Hammer Hall to watch the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform as an influence to follow in the instrumental music path. In the middle of the term on year 8 camp we had some wonderful performances in the talent show that included singing, dancing, playing piano and miming. Throughout this everyone followed the colleges values to the tee, listening to instructions, making new friends and having a great time with their peers. Coming up in semester two we have out Shrek the Musical performance, Battle of the Band and even more to come.
