Cyber Safety at School and Home: Working Together to Keep Our Kids Safe Online
In today's digital world, the internet, online games, social media, smartphones, and tablets are a big part of our children’s daily lives. While these technologies offer many exciting opportunities to learn, play, and connect, it’s important that children understand how to use them safely and responsibly.
What is Cyber Safety?
Cyber safety means using digital technology in a safe and respectful way. It’s about helping children make smart choices online, protect their privacy, and avoid harmful or unsafe situations. Everyone has a role to play—students, parents, families, teachers, and schools all contribute to creating a safer online environment.
What Will Our Students Be Learning?
Students will be taking part in the eSmart Digital Licence program, designed to build their knowledge and skills around:
- Protecting personal information
- Managing screen time
- Avoiding inappropriate or harmful content
- Staying safe when interacting with others online
- Understanding and responding to cyberbullying
- Making positive, respectful choices when using technology
Why Is Your Involvement Important?
Children learn best when school and home work together. As a parent or carer, staying informed about cyber safety helps you support your child in making safe choices online. You can model good habits, have open conversations, and guide them when challenges arise.
To help you feel confident in supporting your child’s online safety, we recommend exploring resources from theeSafety Commissioner—Australia’s leading online safety authority. Their website offers:
- Free parent webinars covering the latest online safety topics
- Fact sheets and videos in multiple languages to help guide family discussions
- Expert advice on setting boundaries and responding to online issues.
