Humanities and Social Sciences Learning Area Snapshot

Term 2 took off with a whirlwind of activities across classes and across years. As the Year 10s and ATAR students get into their exam groove, let’s look back on the term so far. 

Murdoch Street Law Visit 

The Year 8 Academic Extension group had a great session with the legal students from Murdoch University. The group applied a topical real world example of economics and law, by looking at the concerning subject of scams with the students. The legal eagles had exciting scam spotting activities and some important advice on how to protect themselves and their families from the growing problem of scams. Thanks very much to the team from Murdoch, ably led by Asha and the Year 8 students, for their interest and engagement, which really impressed the visitors. Thank you to Mr Wilson for organising this valuable visit. 

Australian Geography Competition

This year’s Australian Geography Competition saw Applecross continue to pursue excellence in the Geography field. The online competition covers a wide range of geography-related curriculum linked content currently taught across HASS. Our students were challenged through a variety of source materials and multiple choice based questions, and we look forward to receiving the results for this nationwide competition early next term. Mr Houden is thanked for his coordination of this annual competition. 

Law Society Mock Trial Competition 

Our Year 10 and 11 Mock Trials teams have started this year’s competition very well and have completed the first two rounds at the time of this edition of the Parent Update. The teams, supported by Ms Wallner, Mr Dickson and Ms Nicholson, attend the Supreme Court for each round and, under the watchful eye of an experienced magistrate or judge, pursue legal claims against opponents. The most recent case was a challenging criminal matter involving allegations of perverting the course of justice in which the students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, sharp thinking and mutual respect.
