Principal's Message

Dear parents and carers

As we officially enter winter, we also reach the midpoint of Term 2. Senior students are currently in the midst of their exams, and most of our students are performing well as we approach the distribution of their Semester 1 reports, which will be sent to parents toward the end of the term.

Celebrating Our Applecross SHS P&C Volunteers

Friday 23 May, was a great opportunity to acknowledge our dedicated P & C Members. The parents and other community members who volunteer their time, energy and expertise make a significant contribution to the way the school looks, feels and operates. We greatly appreciate the important contribution that you make to our school community.

Our school captains, Leeshani Colomba Thanthrige and Boston Yoong, shared a special message of thanks and recognition to our

P & C members via Facebook last week.

Musical Extravaganza

Congratulations to Tim Stapleton, the music staff, and the students involved in the recent collaboration with the Brigham Young University Chamber Orchestra at the Heath Ledger Theatre. This side-by-side experience was inspirational for the students, who performed exceptionally well alongside the talented musicians from Utah. Their performances were of a standard not far from that of WASO!

The Djeran Concerts also provided another opportunity for the students to showcase their talent, further highlighting their dedication and hard work.

Cold and Flu Season

As winter commences, health authorities are emphasising the importance of self-care and personal hygiene to significantly reduce the occurrence of colds and flu in the upcoming months. We kindly request your cooperation in curbing the spread of these illnesses, as well as COVID-19, by following these guidelines:

  1. Keep Your Child at Home When Unwell: If your child is feeling unwell, please keep them at home. This not only helps prevent the spread of infections within the school but also protects other students and staff.
  2. Free Flu Vaccinations: Take advantage of the free flu vaccinations available until the end of June. Immunisation plays a crucial role in safeguarding your child’s health during the flu season.

Remember, a collective effort ensures a healthier and safer environment for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation!

Building Update

We have had another meeting to discuss plans for future capital works with Department officials and representatives from Batemans Architects. The architects have had numerous site visits and done a thorough survey of the school site and three potential building sites (land surveys and geotechnical investigations).

The Department has been asked to prepare a Project Definition Plan (PDP) that outlines a sequenced list of priorities and test delivery options to inform a future business case submission for the Minister’s consideration. The school administration, led by the Principal (also includes Vice Principal, MCS, and Facilities and Grounds Manager), will be included in the Project Control Group meetings for the PDP project. The PDP will be finalised at the end of 2025, ahead of planning for the 2026-27 budget process.

Minor Works Funding

We are pleased to announce that we have received $50,000 from the Western Australian Government to enhance the C Block Quadrangle. Ms. Kim Giddens, MLA, has approved the use of these funds to extend the C Block Veranda, which will provide additional cover and seating for approximately 100 Year 11 students. This project is scheduled for completion during the July school holidays.

Respectful Communication

Effective communication between parents and our school is essential for your child’s education. Our school community thrives on open dialogue, allowing staff, students, parents, and carers to share positive news, address concerns, and maintain transparency. Occasionally, students may encounter challenges or situations where they feel things haven’t been handled well. As parents, it’s crucial to listen to your child and guide them through any problems they may be experiencing. Keep in mind that the information your child provides reflects their honest perspective, but it may not always be entirely accurate or capture the full story.

Feel free to reach out to the relevant staff member for additional information that can clarify the situation and help you support your child’s understanding of what occurred. Rest assured that our dedicated and caring staff will actively address your concerns and work collaboratively to resolve any issues. Through experience, we’ve learned that even the most difficult situations can be successfully navigated.
