What's happening in Boarding?

Weekend Recreational Activities
Kambala Boarders Rec Outing – Bondi Junction Adventure
On Sunday, the Kambala Boarders enjoyed a delightful recreational outing to Bondi Junction. After a busy week at school, the girls took full advantage of a relaxing afternoon to shop, eat, and enjoy some well-earned downtime.
Bondi Junction offered a perfect mix of options – from browsing their favourite stores and trying out new fashion finds, to sampling delicious treats and/or buying some last minute gifts for Mother’s Day.
These outings are such a valued part of the Kambala Boarding experience – giving students a chance to socialise with girls across various year groups, and enjoy the wider Sydney community in a safe and supportive way.
Boarders’ Weekend Fun – Bowling Strikes and Yo-Chi Delights
On Sunday 18th May, our Kambala Boarders enjoyed an afternoon of fun at Strike Bowling at Darling Harbour.
After a quick stop to warm up with hot chocolates from a cosy cafe, the girls hit the bowling lanes, ready for some friendly competition. Strike Bowling provided the perfect setting for an afternoon of energy and excitement—there were cheers for strikes and spares, laughter at the occasional gutter ball, and plenty of team spirit on display. It was a wonderful way to relax and enjoy a fun activity on what was a rainy Sydney day.
Following the bowling fun, the group made their way to Yo-Chi Frozen Yoghurt, where everyone created their own frozen masterpieces. With a huge selection of flavours and toppings, Yo-Chi is a favourite amongst the Kambala Boarders.
The girls also enjoyed a short walk through Darling Harbour and Barangaroo, taking in some of the city sights along the way. It was a fantastic afternoon of connection, laughter, and well-deserved fun for all involved.
National Boarding Week
National Boarding Week is a special time to recognise and celebrate the unique experiences, contributions, and community spirit of boarders across the country. At our school, we marked the week with a variety of activities that highlighted the strength, unity, and generosity of our boarding community.
One of the standout events of the week took place on Tuesday, when the Boarding Prefects hosted a Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser in support of our chosen boarding charity, the Country Education Foundation. The event was a huge success, with 250 sausages cooked and sold on the school oval. The smell of the BBQ drew a long line of hungry day girls, and the sounds of country music added to the festive and relaxed atmosphere.
A big thank you goes to Jacinta Purvis and Bec Guilfoyle, whose help with organising the event and manning the BBQ was greatly appreciated. Their support helped ensure the event ran smoothly and raised funds for a cause close to the hearts of many boarders.
On Thursday, our Boarding Leaders joined leaders from other local boarding schools for a special afternoon tea. It was a wonderful opportunity to network, share experiences, and celebrate the unique role boarding plays in school life. The gathering fostered a strong sense of community and connection across schools.
Throughout the week, the boarding community came together to take part in and lead a number of events that showcased what makes boarding life so vibrant and special. National Boarding Week was a great reminder of the friendships, resilience, and pride that define boarding at our school.
Saturday Sport
Over the past two weekends, our girls have been out and about on the sports fields and courts, soaking up some welcome sunshine and bringing their energy and enthusiasm to every game. From hockey to netball, there’s been a mix of wins, losses, and draws—but most importantly, a lot of fun and team spirit.
Hockey
Despite a draw and a loss over the two weekends, the K1 Hockey girls’ positive attitude and teamwork have shone through. It’s great to see them out there growing together as a team each week. Our lovely Gappie Eleanor is joining them each week on the bus too.
Soccer
Layla and Lilli showed great effort on the soccer field, ending their match against St Cath’s in a draw. A solid result and a good game all around.
Basketball
A shout-out to Holly (Yr 7), who was happy to come away with a win in her basketball match in Week 1 and she even scored 2 goals. A fantastic effort and well deserved victory.
Netball
There’s been a mix of results at Heffron Park. Jackie H and Jenny (Yr 11) enjoyed a win in the first weekend, but their team faced a tougher match in Week 2 against Rose Bay Secondary. Meanwhile, Izzy’s (Yr 8) team had a standout game, securing a 28–8 win. Sonya’s team (Yr 8) also impressed with a strong 23–5 victory—a big day for Yr 8 netball.
Swimming
Holly (Yr 7) competed in the Tivoli Swim Championships in Week 2. Out of the 5 races she swam in, she came away with 4 x 1st place and 1 x 2nd place in her events. Outstanding achievement - well done Holly! Special shout out also to Izzy (Yr 7) who couldn’t compete due to other sporting commitments. These girls get up to train, day in and day out, in the dark and often rain and head over to the pool hours before anyone else gets up. It’s a huge effort from them.
Regardless of the scoreboard, it’s been wonderful to see the girls out enjoying sport these past 2 weeks, building their skills, and supporting one another. Bring on next weekend!
Events
Athletics Carnival
In Week 2, the Senior School Athletics Carnival was in full swing. Students spent the day outdoors participating in various running, jumping, and throwing events. Participation earned valuable house points, and many boarders enthusiastically joined the competitive events. The results will be announced at next week’s assembly. It was a fun and spirited day, showcasing great school pride. A highlight for the boarders was the much-anticipated Boarders vs Day Girls Relay, which brought out loud cheers and friendly rivalry.
School Production - “Nice Work If You Can Get It”
On Thursday night in Week 3, the Boarding staff and Students attended the opening night of the School production ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’. They thoroughly enjoyed the performance, cheering on their classmates and experiencing the lively atmosphere of the show.
To top off a busy Week 3 and to celebrate National Boarding Week, the girls went down to Chargrill Charlies for Friday night dinner, followed by some frozen yoghurt and Acai.
What are we reading?
Book Review: The Yield by Tara June Winch
Currently being read by Year 10
Tara June Winch’s novel The Yield is a thoughtful and emotional story about family, culture, and connection to country. It follows August, a young Aboriginal woman who returns home after the death of her grandfather, Poppy Albert Gondiwindi.
While home, August learns more about her family’s history and her Wiradjuri heritage. She also discovers a dictionary her grandfather was writing, full of Wiradjuri words and their meanings. These words help tell the story of their land, language, and traditions.
The book includes different voices and perspectives, including letters from the past and Poppy’s dictionary entries. These add depth to the story and help readers understand the lasting effects of colonisation on Indigenous families.
The Yield is a moving read that encourages reflection on identity, language, and the importance of preserving culture. It’s a powerful story for young people as they learn more about Australia’s history and the strength of First Nations communities.
