A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Springvale Campus

This term has been an exciting one in the Middle Learning Centre, with students engaging in rich learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum.

In Reading, the MLC have been exploring nonfiction texts to build their understanding of how facts and questions help deepen comprehension. Students have been practising how to pause while reading to ask meaningful questions, use strategies to find answers, and explain their thinking with evidence from the text.

In Writing, students have been learning to write explanation texts. They have been crafting identifying statements that clearly introduce their topic, explaining how and why processes occur using time and cause-and-effect connectives, and incorporating technical vocabulary. Students have also been writing summary statements to bring their ideas together.

In Mathematics, students have been learning to solve division problems using efficient strategies. They have been recalling division facts related to multiplication and using the division algorithm to divide 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. Students have been setting up the algorithm correctly, working step-by-step through each place value and explaining their thinking clearly.

In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been learning how to collaborate and work well with others. They have been practising listening respectfully, communicating kindly, sharing ideas, and working with peers to solve problems calmly. Students have also explored what makes them similar to and different from others and discussed how recognising and respecting these differences helps everyone work and play effectively together.

In Projects, students have been investigating the observable properties of solids, liquids and gases, and exploring how heating and cooling can change the state of different materials. To deepen this learning, the Middle Learning Centre recently attended an excursion to TwistED, where they explored changes of state through hands-on activities such as surface-tension investigations and kitchen chemistry. This engaging experience allowed students to apply their scientific understanding in a fun, real-world context.
