Relieving Principal's Report

Miss Fletcher

WELCOME TO TERM 4

Welcome back to Term 4. Term 4 is always an exciting time of year with lots of learning and celebrations planned. A special welcome to our new families who have enrolled this term. There are many things happening over the term for the students, teachers and parents/carers. Be sure to check the School App, Facebook, Seesaw, the school’s website and your child’s bag (on Wednesdays) for information regarding school events! I would also like to remind everyone the last day for 2023 is now Friday 15 December, 2023

VALE ROBERT SMILKOVSKI

It is with great sadness that we advise the school community of the passing of Mr Rob Smilkovski following a long battle with cancer.

Mr Smilkovski was a local resident for many years, attended Fairvale PS himself, along with his two sons. Over the years he has been a tireless supporter of Fairvale Public School, playing an active role on the school's P&C and Parent Group.  He assisted the group with fundraising initiatives and was instrumental in school banking, returning to the school before the pandemic.

We pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Mr Smilkovski and look back with fond memories on his support of our school and the local community.

PRINCIPAL’S MORNING TEA - TERM 3

On the last Friday of term, Mr Pitt and I hosted a lovely morning tea for the children who had their names drawn from the Term 3 “following the FAIR Rules at Assembly” box. We munched on cupcakes and chips, drank some juice and spoke about the plan for the school holidays. At the end of the morning tea, we awarded each student with a certificate. Congratulations to everyone, and a special mention to Miss Zanatta for organising the morning tea.

KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION STARTS THIS WEEK!

Kindergarten Transition commences on Friday morning. Attendance at each session is very important. The parent information sessions provide valuable information for families to support their child’s start to school life. Information will include supporting student learning in literacy and numeracy, Best Start assessment processes, strategies to support effective transition to school life and school procedures. The transition sessions for the 2024 students provides an opportunity for them to become familiar with the classroom environment and to meet some teachers and peers. It is an exciting time for the school and families. If you know of any families who have children starting school in 2024 and have not enrolled, can you please let them know to come and visit the office. If you have any questions regarding Kindergarten Transition, please contact Mrs. Boyle in the office or speak to Mr. Carbone, relieving Assistant Principal.

2024 ORGANISATION

We are currently organising class structures for 2024 and yesterday we sent home a note regarding family plans for 2024. If you are returning to Fairvale PS in 2024 you do not need to anything, however, if you are planning on leaving OR returning a little late then we need you to complete the note. If you would like to speak to someone about this, please contact the office.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY 2023

Next Friday 27 October is World Teachers’ Day. This is a day that we celebrate all the wonderful things our teachers do for children all over our country. For us here at Fairvale, instead of a day, we always celebrate the whole week! We will acknowledge the dedicated, hardworking teaching staff we have here at Fairvale Public School. Don’t forget to say happy World Teachers’ Week in Week 3 to your teacher. You might decide to surprise him or her with a special card, poem or even a song – I know they will appreciate your kindness. Don’t forget our support teachers who also work with all our children each and every day. We have some surprises up our sleeves!

BIKE VISITS WITH MISS FLETCHER

This last fortnight I visited three classes.

6 Snowy River – On Monday I visited 6S and Mrs Sloggett during literacy time. On arrival, Mrs Sloggett was sharing some of the students’ poems they had completed. It was great to sit and listen to the outstanding poems 6S had created. After they shared, Mrs Sloggett revised the previous learning about literary devices. In pairs, the students used this knowledge to annotate the song ‘You can count on me’, by Bruno Mars. I had an awesome visit with 6S - thank you!

1 Jervis Bay -During my visit with 1J and Miss Volpato, students were working on writing a super sentence! The students made sure they had a capital letter to start their sentence, ended it with a full stop, and made sure the sentence told them about something or someone. After they wrote the sentences, they read them to make sure they made sense. The students wrote some super sentences! I was very proud of them. Keep up the great sentences 1J!

1 Conway – I was super impressed with the mathematicians in class 1C. Everyone was actively participating to create a graph based on the classes favourite sport. The students worked independently to put the information into their maths books. Thanks for letting me join in 1C!

Check out some of my pics in this edition of the school newsletter.

Selective high school applications opening

Selective high school Year 7 entry in 2025—open 9 October to 20 November 2023.

Selective high schools provide a learning environment designed for academically gifted and high potential students.

They help students learn by:

 • grouping them with other gifted students

• using specialised teaching methods so students can learn at a quicker pace and in more detail

• supporting their unique wellbeing needs.

Most students in selective high schools enjoy learning more when their classmates have similar abilities and interests. Research shows that students benefit both academically and socially from the learning environment in selective high schools. Selective high schools are unzoned so you can apply no matter where you live.

The application process:

Complete the online application https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7/information-for-applicants

Applications close on 20 November 2023.

Once the application has been submitted and processed your child will be allocated to a test centre to sit the Selective High School Placement Test on 9 May 2024. Selective high school places are offered based on students’ test performance (academic merit).
