Girl Powered

By Stuti, Meshavi, Deeya and Kavya - Year 4

On October 26, Stuti, Meshavi, Deeya and Kavya attended Glendal Primary School for a "Girl Powered STEM (Robotics/Engineering) Day.” This event was in celebration of the UN International Day of the Girl. The event aimed to empower girls in the field of STEM and created a platform for them to connect with like-minded peers from local schools.

Approximately 30 girls from various schools were invited to participate in this exciting initiative, including Glen Waverley PS, Highvale PS, Highvale SC, Mount Waverley North PS, Harkaway PS (a VEX school), Essex Heights PS, and four girls from Glendal PS. These girls engaged in STEM and robotics activities throughout the day, no prior knowledge or skills were required – just a keen interest and enthusiasm.

This Girl Powered STEM Day not only fostered a love for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics but also encouraged the unity of young girls in pursuing their passions and breaking down barriers in the STEM fields.

Below are their reflections on the day.

Nao humanoid robots!

Nao robots are big robots that follow commands due to their code. In Girl Powered we got to command and code it to follow a dance. By following this code this allowed the robot to play audio (e.g: Music & voice) and dance along. It was so fun exploring plus having fun and seeing their funny and moody reaction.

Vex robots

On the stem Girl Powered program at Glendal primary school, we got to learn and use varies technologies. One of them was VEX robots. They were made of lego-like materials that had numerous abilities, like lifting their handles up, opening and closing their claws and moving around. Glendal primary school participated in a robot competition were students from each school programs robots to pick up blocks that worth some points. The school that earns the most points wins a prize. Glendel primary school won a big board to practice for other competitions. Finally, we had a really wonderful day at Glendal primary school.

At the Girl Powered program one of the programs we did was the avalanche experiment.

How we made the Avalanche!

First, we taped the hole disk except the little hole on the disk. Next, we made a circle and put a line on it then we cut the line and made the circle into a cone. After making the cone we put a hole through it.  After putting the hole in the cone put the straw through the cone next put half a spoon of salt and have a spoon of sand into the disk next cut a tiny PLASTIC straw then cut a slant on both sides. Then we put the straw between another disk like done before. And there you have made it.

Drones

At the girl power program there was an activity which was drones. In this activity we got to code drones to do things such as flips and many more. once we were done coding it was time for the drone to fly and do what we had coded.
