The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter features items from the children who have achieved something special – I trust you enjoy reading their recounts and share in their joy just as much as I have!

ISKA WORLD CUP by Veer (Year 3)

Ever since I knew the World Cup was coming I knew that I had to start preparing. I trained for days with determination and focus, and when it was two weeks away from the tournament I knew I had to get serious.

On Saturday I had just realized that the World Cup was a week away, I was scared and nervous but that didn’t stop me. I was still determined to win. A couple of days before the tournament, I was having all these thoughts about what could go wrong, but then I realized that if my brother won the World Cup I knew that I could too.

On Thursday we had to pack for our trip which took a while and on Friday it was time for us to go to Sydney, the flight was about one hour and thirty minutes long. We had hired a car to go to the hotel where we were staying at night. It took us about an hour to drive from the airport.  Once we got there it was night time already.

The next morning, we had to wake up early to reach the venue. There was the grand opening ceremony, where they had a parade with all participants (about 1500) representing their countries with their flags. There were events before mine and was fun to watch.

After we stretched and warmed up waiting for my event to begin, my dad said “Your event is next Buddy” I replied, “Let's Win”. After waiting for other competitors to perform it was my turn. I took a deep breath and recalled all the steps that I had to do correctly. I performed with all my heart and energy. Finally, the results were out, and my name was announced as First, and I was declared the World Champion!!! It's one of the best moments in my life and I will never forget it!!!

State Athletics Championships: By William and Hirun

On the first of November 2023, I competed in the state competition for athletics at Lakeside Stadium. I represented Glen Waverley Primary School and the Eastern Metropolitan Region in the Under 12’s long jump. We had to take a train to get there. It rained a bit, I was a bit nervous that I was going to fall down during my event but luckily when my event happened it was all sunny.

I was competing against seventeen kids from different schools. It was really hard because there were seventeen people and only three people can make it to the next round. Everyone was extremely good so it was very competitive.  When it was my turn to jump I got so nervous that I stepped over the line. Which was a big disadvantage for me. The people that came top eight get another jump to compete for top three. I came 10th out of 17 people which I was proud of myself as I tried my best.

Overall, I was just happy I made it to the State Championships to represent our school, because making it to that level was already a really big accomplishment. I was really proud of myself. I saw my other friends competing in other events, so I cheered for them.  It was a wonderful experience for me.

On the 1st of November, I represented GWPS in the School Sport Victoria for 80M Hurdles. In the first heat, I came 2nd place with a time of 14.17 seconds, and I got selected to the finals. In the finals I came 5th place with a time of 14.28. It was a great experience to represent GWPS in State Finals, and I am very proud of myself.
