Throughout Term 4, Level 6 has been inquiring into the question, ‘How can energy be generated and transformed ethically?’ Our learners have recently had the opportunity to travel to CERES, where they engaged in enriching and hands-on learning experiences such as ‘eco-system Jenga’. This allowed them the opportunity to deepen their understanding of fossil fuels and its impact on the environment and explore a range of sustainable energy sources such as ‘wind energy’, ‘hydropower’ and ‘solar power’.

The experience at CERES provoked and challenged our learners’ thinking and led to curiosities about how we, as global citizens, can develop sustainable energy solutions to protect our Earth for future generations. In Level 6, learners are developing their skills as scientists through engaging in the STEAM process. They have generated ‘solution-focused’ challenge questions (such as, ‘how can we make solar power more efficient and reliable?’ or ‘how can we reduce the use of fossil fuels in cars?’) and a range of smaller sub-questions that will allow them to focus and deepen their research.

As part of the STEAM process, learners are continuing to build upon their research skills through exploring the concept of academic honesty. They are consolidating their understanding of using multiple sources of information and applying paraphrasing skills when researching. Recently, they have started to appreciate how referencing and creating bibliographies is an integral part of academic honesty.

Level 6 learners are looking forwards to continuing their journey through the STEAM process and developing prototypes to showcase their learning this term.
