JUNIOR SCHOOL

Dear Junior School Parents/Carers and Students

It is a bit hard to believe we are quickly heading towards the halfway point of Term 4.  For our Junior School students, this means around a month remains in the 2023 academic year before our Early Commencement program begins on Monday 27 November.  This will provide students with an opportunity to commence their new subjects and form relationships with their new peers and teachers ahead of the summer break.

It is important that students make the most of these remaining weeks in their Years 7 and 8 classes. There will likely be a number of assessments for each subject, so we encourage students to effectively utilise their diaries to record key dates and to assist with time management.

On that note, a timely reminder about the importance of punctuality.  The first minutes of any class play an important role in sharing the purpose of the lesson, recapping prior knowledge, and establishing an orderly learning environment.  If students are missing crucial instruction during this part of the lesson, engagement with learning becomes more challenging.  Therefore, we ask for your support in reminding your child about the importance of punctuality to every class as well as your support in ensuring your child arrives to school each day with ample time to collect their resources and arrive to their Period 1 class at 9.00am.  Any lateness at the start of the school day must be explained with a note from a parent/carer.  Detentions are issued for repeated lateness to clearly signal to students that punctuality is something we value highly. Your ongoing support with this is much appreciated.

Mr John Simon

Campus Principal - Junior School

CONGRATULATIONS

Many of our Years 7 and 8 students featured in ensembles and bands at the End of Year Music Concert on Thursday 19 October at the Frankston Arts Centre.  In particular, the Training Band has come so far in their first year as musicians at Frankston High School and should be so proud of their efforts!  A sincere thank you to Mr Peter Sharp, Mr Ben Braithwaite, Mr Isaac Bakker, Ms Pauline Coates, Ms Gill Kinnear, Ms Peta Laughlin, Mr Andrew McAdam, Ms Kim Starr, and Ms Danielle Bretherton for their tireless efforts and love of music that inspires so many students.

BIO STUDIO PROJECT

This semester, 34 Years 7 and 8 students are participating in the Bio Studio Project, an exciting cross-curricular program spearheaded by two of our exceptionally passionate, creative and knowledgeable teachers Ms Birra-li Ward and Ms Sarah Edwards. Students are completing masterclasses, incursions and excursions and working alongside artists and scientists to develop a deeper understanding of the problem of plastics, the UN sustainability goals, and ways of developing and working with innovative sustainable biomaterials.  Students will be producing a bioplastic artwork along with a science journal reflecting on their learning. These will be showcased in our Art Exhibition in November this year. The project is a result of Birra-li and Sarah’s successful application for a Teaching Innovation Fellowship through the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership and we are looking forward to following the students’ journeys and seeing what they produce!

END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES

On Monday 11 December we will be celebrating the end of a successful year by running End of Year activities.  Year 7 students will head to Gumbaya World while our Year 8 students will visit Luna Park.  Further information will be published via Compass shortly, including the opportunity to provide consent and payment. We’re looking forward to a fun-filled day for all!
