Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

Stage 1 has been working hard this fortnight. We have been fine-tuning our imaginative writing skills using the Seven Steps program, investigating volume, capacity and position in mathematics and learning all about the world around us in integrated studies. Students have also enjoyed exploring the way their bodies move, incorporating props into dance sequences during creative arts lessons. As we draw closer to the end of the year, please use School Stream to keep updated on upcoming end-of-year events.

English

We continue to explore narrative texts using the Seven Steps to Writing Success program. Here are some sizzling starts and exciting endings from our budding Stage 1 authors:

Sizzling Starts

‘Boom!’ A huge thunderstorm is coming. Fierce lightning crashes against the rolling waves and dark clouds roam the dark grey sky.

‘Woo Hoo!’ I yelled ‘This is the best day of my life!’ Splash! I kicked my legs, I can’t believe I’m big enough to swim in the big pool.

George is all geared up and ready to explore the cliffs. With a grin on his face, he feels great inside. "Yes! It's finally time," cried George, as he begins to lower himself down the rocky cliff face.

Crack! Bang! There was a huge thunderstorm moving towards a man sailing through the calm Pacific Ocean. Crack! Lightning shot from the dark sky. Splash! A huge wave tumbled over him.

Squelch! Squash! This is a dangerous island, she thought. A deserted jungle lies upon it. Exploring is going to be very hard. Squelch! Mud.

Pshhhh. A man far away from home. Waves crashing over his tiny tugboat. Getting wet in the terrible weather. All by himself, lonely. No food or water.

Bang! The fierce storm was appearing to get closer and closer. A gust of sea splashes into Jo's old fishing boat.

Exciting Endings

He felt something in his heart. He thought it was nothing, but he realised it was friendship and teamwork!

It felt like a dream but she knew it wasn't. She stretched her arms out and felt the breeze tingle on her face and arms.

10 minutes left! A couple of steps away...X marks the spot. Found it!

Mathematics

We are learning to:

  • give and follow instructions accurately
  • use formal maps and plans

We know we are successful when we can:

  • use directions, such as left and right, to instruct people where to go
  • locate features of familiar locations such as my school or towns within maps
  • create and describe paths between two locations
  • locate position on maps using grid references

Physical Education

This term in PE, students are developing their competence and confidence in applying their fundamental movement skills to a modified sport. Modified sports help to develop general movement skills and basic techniques. Students will be playing modified games, such as kickball, stickball and paddleball.

Kickball is similar to the game of Softball, only with a soccer ball being rolled by the pitcher to the player. The player who kicks the ball then runs strategically between the bases.

Stickballis similar to the game of T-Ball, only with a plastic cricket stump as the bat being used to hit the ball. Students then run strategically between the bases.

Paddleball is similar to the game of T-Ball, only with a table tennis paddle bat or a tennis racquet as the bat used to hit the ball. Students then run strategically between the bases.
