Principal's Report

Dear families,

One focus at St Brigid’s this year has been to develop a sense of belonging within our community. What does it mean to be a member of the St Brigid’s community? What sense of responsibility do you as an individual have in seeing St Brigid’s flourish? Are you a consumer or a partner of St Brigid’s and why does it matter? This term we have already seen students and staff depart and move onto new stages in their lives. One thing I try to instil on those leaving us is that they will always be a member of the St Brigid’s community and are always welcome back.

Two weekends ago we had the decade reunions for the Classes of 1973, 1983, 1993 etc and it was such a great vibe. Past students who had not seen each other for years and even decades greeted one another with smiles and hugs. Many stories were shared as we toured the school. What stories will you be able to share about St Brigid’s? What has been your involvement?

This week we celebrated All Souls Day on Thursday, an important day on the Catholic calendar when we remember those that have passed away. In today’s prayer section of the newsletter I have provided a reflection from Joan Chittister that picks up on the reason we celebrate those lives. Even when members of our community pass away, they are still part of the St Brigid’s community.

Any good relationship requires good communication and I acknowledge that I, as Principal, can still improve in that area and I continue to explore better ways of spreading the good news. In a similar vein, I ask that families communicate with the College whenever matters arise that are of a concern to you, rather than let it fester, in addition to letting the school know of any changes in your circumstances that may affect our planning and resourcing. We are well under way with 2024 preparations and we do need to know if things will be different from what we expect. This is what builds a sense of belonging.

Next week we have a school closure day on Monday 6 November as the staff continue to focus on our Trademark: “We are a TEAM that acts with Strength and Gentleness” in which we develop the skills to hold one another to account, motivate others (including students) and fully engage in our roles. Then on Tuesday we have the public holiday for the Melbourne Cup.

Keep safe,

Gerard Raven
