Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

Stage 1 students thoroughly enjoyed the NAIDOC week celebrations, beginning with the welcome and smoking ceremony. Students engaged in a range of art, music, PE and literacy activities to build on our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This linked nicely to our study of Australia, where we learnt the history behind some place names and what makes Australia unique.

We would like to remind parents and carers of the importance of having your child at school before learning starts each day. This not only ensures they do not miss valuable learning time but is so important for social connections with friends and allows time to play before the morning bell rings at 9:05 am.

English

We are learning to:

  • write an engaging narrative text
  • use a story graph to plan our writing

We know we are successful when we can:

  • plan writing to include a sizzling start, backfill, complication and an exciting ending
  • write a sizzling start to ‘hook’ my audience
  • explain what makes an ending exciting
  • plan an exciting ending and ‘ban the boring’

Mathematics

We are learning:

  • that different shaped objects and containers can have the same volume
  • to measure the capacity of a container

We know we are successful when we can:

  • predict, test and explain why different containers such as bottles, cartons and cans can hold the same capacity
  • select appropriate informal units to measure the internal volume (capacity) of containers
  • measure the capacity of a container by counting and recording the quantity of uniform informal units used

Integrated Studies

We are learning to locate continents and oceans on a world map.

We know we are successful when we can:

  • label all seven continents on a map
  • label all five oceans on a map
  • explain where Australia is in relation to other continents

Creative Arts

We are learning to explore and select movement using the elements of dance to express ideas, feelings or moods.

We know we are successful when we can:

  • respond to imagery through movement demonstrating an awareness of time, space and dynamics
  • select and combine movements to form sequences
  • participate as an audience member
  • respond to questions about the dance performances
