Chemical Science
CURRICULUM FOCUS
This week in Chemical Science we are learning that objects are made of materials that have observable properties.
- I can identify different materials and group them accordingly. For example- texture, colour or flexibility.
VOCABULARY
Material: any substance that an object is made from. Glass, chalk, paper, wax, water, air, clay and plastic are all different materials.
Properties: characteristics that can be observed or measured such as size, shape, color, texture and density.
Texture: Rough, smooth, hard, soft, liquid or solid.
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING
Material Scavenger Hunt
Materials: A list of materials (e.g. wood, plastic, metal, fabric, paper).
Activity: Create a scavenger hunt list of various materials for your child to find around the house or yard. Ask them to collect samples or take pictures of each material and categorize them based on observable properties like texture, color, or flexibility. For e.g. a stick found in the yard is wood, clothing is fabric, a book is paper.
Learning Goal: Identify and classify materials based on their properties.
