Coping Skills
Coping skills are tools or strategies anyone can use to manage their feelings, reduce stress, and become more resilient. What works for you one day may not work the next, so build up your coping toolbox by practising a variety of strategies.
The options are limitless, but here are some coping skill ideas to get you started:
Be Active
- Put on music and dance
- Build with LEGO or blocks
- Do 10 star jumps
- Run on the spot for 20 seconds
- Go for a walk or run
- Do some yoga or stretching
- Play with a ball – bounce, catch, kick
Find Your Calm
- Take some deep breaths
- Listen to music or sing a song
- Close your eyes and count backwards from 100
- Take a quiet break
- Have a drink of water
- Think of a calm, happy place
- Blow bubbles
Get Creative
- Colour, draw, or paint
- Play an instrument
- Play with Play-Doh or kinetic sand
- Make up a song
- Create a dance
- Write a poem
- Make up a new game
Connect with Others
- Cuddle or play with your pet
- Read a book with someone
- Play a game with a friend or family member
- Work on a puzzle with someone
- Write someone a letter
- Share your feelings with someone you trust
- Ask for help
- Call a friend to catch up
Shift Your Mindset
- Think of something positive
- Focus on one thing you are grateful for
- Identify your top three strengths
- Think about something you're looking forward to
- Focus on the present moment
- Focus on what is in your control
- Practice reframing ("I didn’t fail; I learned.")
I understand that it can be difficult to try something new - especially when we are feeling anxious, angry, or distracted. Try a new coping skill when you’re feeling calm to see what you enjoy and what might work best for you.
Take care, and have a lovely weekend.
