Happenings in Food Studies
Our Year 12 students are currently developing a podcast that explores a range of restrictive diets, including Keto, Paleo, Jenny Craig, and I Quit Sugar.
As part of this project, they are required to analyse the information they gather using sound research principles, with a focus on nutritional accuracy and dietary suitability.
They will then compare these diets to the recommendations outlined in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and provide informed suggestions for achieving a balanced, health-supportive diet.
Following this, the class will shift focus to the global issue of food security. They will examine the concepts of food security and food insecurity, and investigate the challenges of feeding a rapidly growing population—both in Australia and globally.
Since 2024, the world’s population has grown by 71.2 million people. This raises a crucial question: how can we sustainably feed an ever-expanding global community?
This semester, Year 10 students have begun an exciting new course—Make, Bake and Create.
The course kicked off with a fun twist as students watched Paris Hilton demonstrate how not to make lasagne! From there, it was up to them to step in and show how to prepare lasagne safely and correctly.
Currently, students are investigating the properties of food and have been surprised by the sugar content in many everyday drinks.
One of the most eye-opening discoveries was that a medium-sized Mango Boost Juice contains a staggering 12.5 teaspoons of sugar, closely followed by 11.5 teaspoons in a 500ml bottle of Dare Mocha.
These 'hidden sugars' can significantly contribute to weight gain—a key risk factor for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
These important health issues will be explored in greater depth later in the semester.
Year 9 students have been honing their baking skills by practicing the creaming method with butter and sugar while making a delicious Apple Cinnamon Teacake.
In addition, most students have successfully completed their DoFoodSafely certificate, demonstrating their understanding of safe food handling practices.
Measurement was the key focus for Year 8 as they made their Anzac Biscuits, along with revising food safety and personal hygiene.
7B and 7C students have started their Food Studies sessions by making Chocolate Balls and Pizza – with a focus on safety, personal hygiene and kitchen dynamics.
As always, seeing the enjoyment students get when they present what they have made is so rewarding.

Scoresby Secondary College Soirée
The Scoresby Secondary College Soiree was a celebration of our students' talents and featured solo, duo, ensemble and band performances from students across all year levels.
Many students were performing in public for the very first time and the supportive audience of peers, families and friends created a warm and encouraging environment where their musical talents could shine.
