The Power of Kindness:
How Being Kind Helps You Too
Kindness isn’t just something nice we do for others — it’s also a powerful way to improve our own mental health and wellbeing. When we show kindness, we create a ripple effect that spreads positivity, not just around us, but within us too.
Research shows that acts of kindness, even small ones , can reduce stress, boost our mood, and improve our sense of connection to others.
Whether it's offering a helping hand, giving someone a compliment, or simply smiling at someone who looks like they’re having a tough day, kindness has a big impact.
Being kind also helps us feel more confident, increases our empathy, and even lowers anxiety. It's a reminder that we have the power to influence the world around us in a positive way, even when we feel like things are out of our control.
Here are a few simple ways to practise kindness:
- Noticing the kind things people have done for us and taking time to say “Thank you”.
- Checking in on a friend.
- If you see someone who seems to be left out, inviting them to spend time in your group.
- Open the door for someone, or offer to put their rubbish in the bin.
- Writing gratitude letters to some one special in your life
- Be kind to yourself, too, self-kindness matters just as much.
Kindness doesn’t require grand gestures. Often, it’s the smallest acts that leave the biggest mark.
So the next time you’re wondering how to lift your mood or make a difference, start with kindness — it’s a win for everyone.
