Hands On Heads Literacy Coaching

Dear Principals,
Hoping all is well. Here’s a tip when facilitating a meeting, plus a FREE PL about language comprehension:
Accountability, Intention and Participation During PLs
When I lead a workshop, facilitate planning, or deliver professional learning, I prioritise giving teachers and leaders the chance to reflect on and action the content during the session, rather than after it has ended.
Stephen R. Covey ('The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People') states, 'Accountability breeds response-ability'.
The template below is an example of how teachers and leaders can be active participants by taking notes during a session. They reflect on how the information they’re learning will influence their teaching or leadership practice and take steps towards immediate action.
These examples are from a Year 7/8 assessing vocabulary workshop:
You or your colleagues might try this the next time you lead facilitate PL or a meeting.
Restructuring the Literacy Block: What Happens After Decodables
Join me for a FREE 45-minute webinar where I will unpack how to restructure the literacy block to move beyond decodables, fostering depth and rigour in students’ language, literacy and literature skills.
The session will also break down the fundamental elements of an effective literacy block, providing practical strategies and examples for classroom application. You'll leave with a clear pathway to explore resources, for continued growth and achievement in literacy.
By the end of the session, you will:
- Explore how to purposefully align reading and writing instruction to strengthen language comprehension and writing craft.
- Understand how to restructure the literacy block to move beyond decodables and develop depth and rigour in language comprehension
- Learn the fundamental elements of an effective literacy block.

Interested in Being Featured?
I’m currently interviewing school leaders/classroom teachers to share their Literacy Success Stories- regardless of the approach, resources, programs, pedagogy, instructional practices, direction, etc. Success being however/whatever that has looked like for your school- transforming approaches, a shift in teacher practice, aligned beliefs, more engagement, teachers ‘on board’, implementing change, increased student outcomes, etc.
If you would like to feature your success story and celebrate your win (no matter how big or small) to the wider education community without judgement and with curiosity, please email me: amanda@handsonheads.au.
