Flexible Work Initiative: Supporting the Wellbeing and Sustainability of School Leadership

The Flexible Work Initiative is aimed at improving access to flexible working arrangements for school leaders. This initiative recognises the complex demands of school leadership roles and the urgent need to strengthen wellbeing, retention, and sustainability across the system.

The extension of the initiative into next year will see 150 grants offered to school leaders. Through each grant, schools receive funding for 0.2 FTE of a school leader’s salary to enable a flexible work arrangement for up to 12 months.

School leaders consistently report high levels of workload pressure, often extending well beyond standard hours. The Flexible Work Initiative provides a framework for principals and assistant principals to explore arrangements that balance professional responsibilities with personal commitments, without compromising the operational needs of schools.

The APF strongly supports this initiative, and we encourage members to apply.  Information on how the initiative works and how to apply is available here.
