What's Happening in Year 10?
It has been a busy and exciting week for our Year 10 Students who have engaged with our Careers Program; in a range of activities designed to build their confidence, skills, and knowledge about future pathways.
On Tuesday, 26th August, we welcomed Kris Dixon from Nutrien Ag who spoke about careers in Agronomy and Agriculture. Kris’s knowledge in this space included everything from technology innovation to how we can now map farming sites for efficiency and productivity. Full of life and energy, his presentation was both inspiring and incredibly relatable for our students; they gained a strong understanding of the ongoing opportunities available in the agricultural sector and how the ag sector is changing as well as the vital role agronomy plays in supporting farmers and communities.
On Wednesday, 28th August, our Year 10 students participated in Mock Job Interviews. In preparation, students wrote cover letters and résumés tailored to a job of their choice, before sitting down for a formal interview with a panel of community members and industry professionals. Students took pride in their appearance on the day and dress appropriately and professionally for their interviews. This invaluable experience gave students a taste of real-world expectations and constructive feedback to help them succeed in the future. A huge thank you goes to Abby Mulquiny, Simon Peck (Industry and Enterprise teacher), Year 10 Advisory teachers Claire Smith and Rhys Thompson, and Julie Burke and Mary-Anne Sait from the North Central LLEN for their support and organisation.
We would also like to sincerely thank our guest interview panel, who gave their time and expertise to guide our students: Bec Cossar, Jasper Walsh & Broden Minogue
On Monday, 1st September, we welcomed Leanne Gretrix from the East Charlton Hotel and the Cricket Club Hotels. Leanne spoke with our students about her career path and experiences in the hospitality industry. She highlighted the different roles involved in running a venue, the importance of money handling, a willingness to learn on the job, and the opportunities the industry can offer. Hospitality is a popular pathway for part-time work, and several of our students already have experience working at these local venues, giving them a head start in developing workplace skills.
On Tuesday, 2nd September, we welcomed Michelle Jenkyn from CommBank. Michelle shared insights into her career journey and experiences in the banking and finance industry. She spoke about the wide range of roles available, the importance of strong communication and customer service skills. Michelle also highlighted the opportunities for growth and progression within the industry.
A big thank you to all our guest speakers, staff, and supporters who made this week possible. These experiences are a vital part of preparing our students for the future and encouraging them to explore the many different career pathways ahead.
Mathematics
Year 10 students are spread across a number of mathematics classes. Those doing Year 10 Core mathematics are delving into some very heavy statistics work under the guise of Mr Rathjen. The General Mathematics class with Mrs Peverill are learning about Networks, quite a new concept for students, and the Mathematical Methods students are finding average and instantaneous rates of change. Finding instantaneous rate of change has involved them firstly drawing tangents and then learning a whole new language of mathematics, including derivatives, which they have been finding using limits and First Principles. Boy, will they be glad when they find an easier way!
Year 10 Food Technology
Year 10's have been busy looking into Food Truck Menus. This week they have enjoyed making Mexican cus
VCE ART
Learning at SAM (Shepparton Art Museum)
Last Thursday, Annie, Georgia & Poppy travelled to Shepparton to visit the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) as part of their Unit 4 Art: Making and Exhibiting studies. The Outcome 3 focus is the conservation & care of artworks & the class was very fortunate to receive a presentation from Education Officer, Silvi Kadillari as well as Exhibitions & Collections Officer, Jen Parker. Jen & Silvi were generous with their time & provided an excellent insight into SAMs processes & procedures, which aim to ensure that the highest levels of care are applied when storing, exhibiting, handling & transporting works of art. The class visited all spaces in the gallery, with a particular focus on the ‘Stories from the SAM collection’ exhibition & ‘Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio’ exhibition- an amazing travelling exhibition from the Art Gallery of NSW. All in all, it was an amazing day, which enabled the class to apply their prior classroom learnings to a real-world context and experience. We would highly recommend a visit to SAM if you have not been there before!
