Book Review by Andrei
Andrei recommended the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Book 3 The last Straw by Jeff Kinney. The graphic novel is set in the town of Plainview where the Heffley family lives and Westmore Middle School where Greg studies. The main characters are Greg Heffley, Rowley, Rodrick, Manny, Frank and Susan Heffley. Frank Heffley, Gregs father attempts to toughen up Greg by forcing him to play organised sport and some other "manly" activities, which Greg avoids or fails at. Frank threatens Greg by trying to send him to another school. Instead, Greg impressed his dad by joining something else which actually worked. He would recommend the book to Grade 3 students to year 6 students and rates it 4.5/5 stars.
What's Been Happing in Foundation?
Foundation have had a jam-packed week in Literacy and Numeracy, and even managed to fit in some ‘free play’! In Literacy, we’ve been learning alternative spellings of the vowel sounds – these can be quite tricky! The letter Y on the end of a short word makes the sound /ie/ like ‘cry’, and at the end of a longer word it represents the sound /ee/ like ‘dusty’. We’ve also learnt our first trigraph; 3 letters that represent one sound – /igh/ like in night and light. In our writing, we’ve added to our sentences so that they now have a WHO and a DO, they begin with a WHEN and end with a WHERE. I know students are very excited to share their writing books with their grown-ups at Parent Teacher Student Conferences next week. In Numeracy, we’ve just completed a unit on length, mass and capacity. We braved the freezing weather on Friday to compare the capacity of various containers, by pouring in one cup of water and checking how much space was still remaining.
This term in F-2 Humanities students have been taking a trip around Australia, visiting the various states and territories. Recently we ‘visited’ Sydney where we admired the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Foundation students constructed their own bridges, complete with the Australian Flag (and so additional artistic design motifs and colours!). Next stop will be Sunny Queensland.
