NAIDOC Week at Greensborough College

On Friday 25 July, Greensborough College proudly held its NAIDOC Week celebrations, the first time our school has marked this important occasion in this way. NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to recognise and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our event began with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Thane Gannaway Garvey, followed by a yidaki (didgeridoo) performance from Jamie Armistead. This was a particularly special moment, as it was Jamie’s first time playing the yidaki at our school. It was equally moving to see the entire school walk together through the cleansing smoke, sharing in a moment of reflection and respect. The official proceedings concluded with a Little Long Walk, symbolising unity and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

We were delighted to welcome guests from Diamond Valley Special Development School, who joined us in celebrating and learning together.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, celebrates the achievements of the past, the resilience and legacy of communities, and the bright vision for the future. Our celebration reflected this spirit, a moment of pride, learning and respect for culture and history.

A heartfelt thank you goes to all who contributed to making this event possible, from our organisers to our student leaders, and to everyone who took part with open hearts and minds. This was a significant step in our school’s journey to ensure First Nations histories and cultures are recognised, respected and celebrated all year round.
