Year 10 Design Students Explore Sustainable Practices at Hanlon Park

Year 10 Design students from Marist College Ashgrove recently attended an engaging excursion at Hanlon Park, hosted by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and Construction Skills Queensland. The day was designed to give students hands-on exposure to real-world design and environmental practices, while highlighting the role of landscape architects and construction professionals in shaping sustainable community spaces.

Students participated in a rotation of interactive activities, each providing a unique insight into the field. These included landscape architecture drawing sessions, where they practiced visualising design concepts, designing their own park layout from a birds-eye view, and a section view, plant and weed identification activity, which deepened their understanding of environmental management. A guided tour of the facility allowed students to see the park’s features and restoration work up close, while the simulation creek building activity gave them the chance to collaborate in creating miniature water systems, reinforcing lessons in both design thinking, sustainability, and flood situations.

The excursion was not only informative but also inspiring, allowing students to connect their classroom project of ‘The Bus Shelter’ learning to practical applications in the community. It highlighted the importance of creative problem-solving, environmental stewardship, and collaborative design in creating resilient and functional public spaces.
