The boarding houses have been particularly quiet over the last week, with many boarders taking advantage of the Ekka mid-term break and heading out on leave. I’m sure many families have enjoyed getting their son home for a few days as we hit the midpoint of the term. The boys who remained at Marist had a chance to relax and catch up on study, but they also made the most of the great weather, with day trips organised to Broadbeach for some fishing and a swim, plus a day out at the Ekka.
We are about to enter that time of year when the Year 12s are getting busier as they prepare for end-of-year examinations and the Year 11 cohort are starting to step up and assume some of the leadership responsibilities. All Year 11 students recently had the opportunity to apply for senior leadership positions for 2026 and many boarders applied which is a very positive sign. I commend all boys who decided to apply and went through the student leadership process. It is a good experience to reflect on and communicate how you would lead if given the opportunity. Special congratulations to the following boarders who have been appointed to senior leadership roles:
James Johnston – College Captain
Liam Shay – College Vice Captain (Mission)
Joseph Murphy – Boarding Captain
Ewan Wood – Boarding Captain
The next stage in the leadership selection process allows boys to apply for positions within their House. I know many Year 11 boarders are keen to step up and give back to the House they have been part of since starting at Marist College Ashgrove and we wish them luck with their applications.
Last Tuesday, a spirited crowd was entertained by the annual City vs Country rugby league match. Our Year 12 boarders proudly lined up for the Country team against their dayboy mates in what was a much-talked-about fixture. Unfortunately for us, Country went down by two points to City, but the match was close throughout and was played in a very positive, competitive spirit. The City team retain the “Capo Cup”, which is named after former staff member Luke Caplick, and we look forward to another great contest next year.
The focus over the next few weeks will be getting ready for upcoming school assessment. We will be working with the boys to prepare thoroughly and encouraging them to make the most of the great help that is available to them in boarding and in the day school.
