Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon

We are at the half-way mark on the season, with four rounds to go for the team sports and our first AIC meet for track and field next week. Even after three and a half years at the College, it continues to impress me how Marist boys get involved, take pride in their College and perform to their best on a regular basis. The commitment and dedication that the boys show week in week out will set them up for life. We are no longer the biggest school in the AIC, St Laurence’s and Iona have more students than us, but we consistently provide the most teams and the greatest depth of participation across the whole AIC.

Our rugby league boys are showing real determination and passion each week, led by Mr Lachlan Gough as Co-ordinator, Mr Brad Winchester as Head Coach and a strong coaching group of staff and external coaches. Over a number of years now there has been steady and clear improvement in our rugby league. The whole program will be aiming to finish hard over the next few weeks to ensure we finish as high as we can across both the firsts and aggregate shields.

Our track and field team continues to work hard as they prepare for their big day in Week 1 of next term. This is a huge operation, one that Marist prides itself on, and is led magnificently by Old Boy and staff member, Mr Richard Graham and Old Boy, Mr Robin Martin, supported by a team of dedicated staff and external coaches who work hard to help the boys improve their technical and physical performance. Good luck to the 74 boys competing at Met North trials next week and the first AIC lead up meet next Thursday.

Our tennis program continues to go from strength to strength. A cancelled round against St Patrick's College has meant a frustrating start to the season but with our quality tennis players and overall depth in tennis we will no doubt be in the mix at the end of the season. The program overall has had a wonderful start to the season with many comprehensive victories. Well done to Head Coach Mr Andrew Ward for the clear improvement over the last four years.

Basketball continues to grow and develop with our overall results on the improve year on year for the last few years. This is testament to the commitment of our basketball community, led by Ms Samantha Davids. The 1st V, coached by Mr James Lymer have had a frustrating start in 2025 and their results have not matched their effort, their commitment or their dedication. The whole program has a positive energy right now and with the commitment of the boys and staff and I am sure they will finish strongly as a reward for their efforts.

Well done to our hockey team continuing our recent successes. It has been great to see our strong hockey tradition maintain in 2025 as we get close to the business end of the season. Thanks to Ms Kathryn Badini for her leadership and passion for Marist hockey.

US College Seminar- Here at Marist

As a part of our commitment to supporting boys academic choices post-high school we have our second presentation on US College information for the year. This time we welcome Aussie Athletes Agency to Ashgrove to provide information on the pathway for all families even considering the US college pathway system for sports.

Our first information night in Term 2 by Study & Play USA proved hugely popular and Aussie Athletes Agency will be able to discuss the pathway, processes and procedure, requirements and challenges to everyone who is interested. AAA has supported a number of Marist students achieve their goal, including Sam Keogan, who is in the US playing football.

I strongly encourage anyone to attend who is even curious about this opportunity, and the younger you are the better as the process involves decision making around subject choices and requirements from Year 9 so student in Years 7 and 8 are encouraged to attend as well as boys from all year levels.

When: 6:00pm Monday 25 August

Where: Tower Function room, Marist College Ashgrove

Hockey

Ms Kathryn Badini

Our Hockey boys played Padua on EKKA Friday down at Burringbar Park. In a few short weeks, we are combing well as a team, becoming more confident in our passing and press. The final result on Friday was 2-1 to us with goals coming from Fletcher Cabot in a short corner and Lincoln Stockwell in play. A shout out also to our goalkeeper Jordan Pratt who is new to the pads this year but is making some exceptional saves against some top-quality players.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis

This week I’d like to begin by recognising one of our coaches and former 1st IV Captain (2024), Henry Lambley, as he takes the next big step in his journey.

Henry has been part of the Marist tennis program since Year 5, and I’ve had the privilege of coaching him from his Year 7 days—even before I was appointed Head Coach. From the start, Henry stood out not only as a player but as someone who was always willing to lend a hand. Whether it was helping a teammate or giving his time to others, Henry consistently showed the qualities of a good coach—and, more importantly, a great person.

Now, Henry is off to the USA, where he’ll be juggling a degree in the medical field with representing his new college on the tennis court. It’s a challenge that suits him perfectly: brains, racquets, and probably a few late-night study sessions.

On behalf of the program, I wish Henry every success in this exciting new chapter. We’ll be cheering him on from afar—and waiting for some stories (and hopefully a few photos) when he comes back to visit.

Marist Open and Primary Singles Championships

Over two afternoons of fierce competition, both our Opens and Primary tournaments served up thrilling tennis, great sportsmanship, and plenty of drama as players battled it out to be crowned this year’s champions.

Opens Tournament

Night one was all about survival, as players fought through a tough round-robin draw to earn their place in the knockout stages. The big names rose to the occasion, setting up some mouth-watering clashes.

One of the highlights came in the Quarter Finals, where Indy Headrick faced close mate Tommy Revis. In a match played with intensity and spirit, Indy edged through in a narrow win that had both boys walking off the court with their heads held high. He went on to meet Oscar White in the Semi Final, where Oscar’s consistency proved too strong.

On the other side of the draw, last year’s champion Fletcher Wessling faced his long-time sparring partner Will Lambley. Fletcher once again showed his big-match experience, booking his place in the final for the second year in a row.

The much-anticipated Final between Fletcher and Oscar didn’t disappoint. Oscar’s hard work on his serve and backhand kept him toe-to-toe with the defending champion, and the crowd was treated to an intense battle from start to finish. In the end, Fletcher’s composure saw him edge out Oscar in a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 victory, securing his second straight title. The match had the crowd glued to their seats until the very last point—a fitting finale to a fantastic Opens tournament.

Primary Tournament

In the Primary division, the final came down to Chase Richardson and Leo Scuderi. While the scoreboard showed a commanding 6-0 win for Chase, the tennis was far closer than the numbers suggest, with both players fighting for every point. Chase’s victory sees him crowned this year’s Primary Champion.

Other standout performers included Chandler Forest and Ted Jorgensen, who both impressed with their run through the draw. A special mention must go to Tom Laherty, whose rapid improvement carried him all the way to the Semi Finals—a great sign of things to come.

Congratulations

Open’s singles Champion

Fletcher Wessling

Primary Singles Champion

Chase Richardson

Thank You

A huge thank you goes to all players, parents, and supporters who made the tournament such a success once again. The standard of tennis, the spirit of competition, and the community support around the courts continue to make this one of the highlights of our tennis calendar.

AIC

I hope everyone has enjoyed a well-earned mid-term break and is feeling refreshed, because it’s time to get back on court and back into training as we prepare for this week’s clash against our good friends at St Laurence’s College.

This will be our second home game of the season, and our boys are ready to step up, fight hard, and make the most of the home-court advantage.
