Grade 3

Reading

Our Grade 3 students have recently completed their novel study of the much-loved story Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. Throughout this unit, students explored the characters, setting, and important themes of friendship, kindness, and bravery that make this story so special.

To conclude our learning, students enjoyed watching the movie version of Charlotte’s Web. This gave them a wonderful opportunity to compare the book with the film and notice similarities and differences between the two. Students shared thoughtful observations about how the characters were portrayed, how key events were shown on screen, and how the movie brought the farm setting to life.

During the novel study, students:

  • Discussed the feelings, actions, and choices of key characters such as Wilbur, Charlotte, and Fern
  • Practised answering comprehension questions and making inferences
  • Learned new vocabulary from the story

We are very proud of the enthusiasm and engagement shown by our Grade 3 students throughout this unit. They demonstrated strong listening skills, thoughtful discussion, and a growing love of literature. Well done, Grade 3, on completing your Charlotte’s Web novel study!

Writing

Over the past few weeks, our Grade 3 students have been working hard to strengthen their writing skills at both sentence level and text level. We are very proud of the progress they have made and would like to share what we have been learning in class.

They have developed a clearer understanding of sentence structure by identifying subjects and predicates, using correct punctuation, and creating complete sentences. Students practised unscrambling and combining sentences, exploring simple, compound and complex sentences

At a text level, students focused on narrative writing, particularly planning and writing effective resolutions and conclusions, learning how characters solve problems, how stories end, and how characters respond to these solutions. Through mentor texts such as Charlotte’s Web and regular free-writing opportunities, students also worked on adding detail using adjectives, expanding vocabulary, and writing more engaging and descriptive sentences. Overall, students have shown increased confidence, fluency and independence in their writing as we conclude the term.
