Kitchen Garden

From Simone & Jill
We are very excited to finally have a full Kitchen Garden program running in term 2! Our first class is a 5/6 class, LA10C & we started with an acknowledgement of all the 5/6 class members who had helped Jill in the garden in term 1, watering & harvesting & composting.
For our Acknowledgement of Country, Adam Eshaffar gave one in Mandarin, and Jill acknowledged the First Nations men and women who had served in WW1 & WW2 when they were not citizens, nor welcomed home on equal terms.
There was a lot of catching up to be done - harvesting for Friday’s class, watering, fertilising and soil preparation for winter. And we welcomed a botanist, Max K’s dad Drew, to the garden!
Hugo found some fungus on rotting wood which was expertly identified by Drew, and beautifully sketched in our new garden journal. All students will be invited to add something. Riley B-W found a praying mantis, expertly camouflaged in the tomato leaves, & drew the second entry in our journal.
For our first cooking class, we made dips with ingredients from the garden, and focaccia & radishes to eat them with. We had a gorgeous, colourful array of vegetables to use, including carrots, a lemon, tomatoes & radishes picked on Thursday & pumpkin harvested in term 1. We also had some bonus surprise potatoes, so we thinly sliced them & topped our focaccia with potato & rosemary.
For our dips, each bench made a different dip which they shared so that everyone got to try some of each. We had roast tomato & white bean dip, pumpkin humous, carrot & cumin dip and a creamy warrigal greens dip.
With an El Niño now likely and less rainfall and warmer days ahead this winter, we will be focussing on water saving measures in the garden. We invite all parents, grandparents and other family members with WWCC to join us in the garden on a Thursday and the kitchen on a Friday. Thank you Shea, Drew and Maureen for your help!!
