đ± Wellbeing Snapshot: Building Mental Fitness
Just like physical fitness, mental fitness is about keeping our minds healthy, strong, and resilient. The great news is that mental fitness can be practised every day- at school, at home, and in our relationships with others. The more we practise, the stronger our minds become.
Here are five key areas of mental fitness we focus on at school:
đ§ Embrace Flexible Thinking
Flexible thinking means being open to different ways of seeing things and trying new ideas. It helps us when things donât go as planned. By thinking flexibly, we can keep going when faced with challenges, cope when things donât go our way, and look for solutions instead of getting stuck on problems.
đ Live Mindfully
Living mindfully is about paying full attention to the present moment without judgement and with curiosity. For example, when we are eating, we can notice the taste, texture, and colour of our food. When we are walking, we can notice the ground beneath our feet. When listening to someone, we can give them our full attention without getting distracted. Mindfulness helps us slow down, focus, and feel more calm and aware.
đ€ Grow Connections
Connecting with others helps us feel confident, supported, and able to be ourselves. Strong relationships with friends, family, and teachers help us feel safe and valued, reminding us that we donât have to face challenges alone.
đŻ Act Purposefully
Acting purposefully means doing things that are meaningful and important to us. Even small actions- like helping at home, supporting a classmate, or doing our best in learning- help us feel good about ourselves. These actions build our sense of who we are and how we want to be in the world.
đ Recharge Your Body
Rest, relaxation, movement, and sleep all help recharge our bodies and minds. When we look after our bodies, our brains work better too. Being active and getting enough sleep helps us think clearly, solve problems, make good decisions, and feel more positive emotionally.
By practising these five areas of mental fitness, we are helping our children build strong foundations for wellbeing- now and into the future. đ
