Last week we celebrated Diwali, the Hindu Festival Lights. Staff set up an information table for children, to explain what the festival is all about and what is done to celebrate it in different parts of the world. During both Before Care and After Care session students were provided with Rangoli, a traditional Indian decoration and pattern, to decorate and then display around the service. Others chose the self guided paper craft of making Diyas, a small cup shaped oil lamp typically made from baked clay. These were then used to decorate our info table. Apricot coconut balls were whipped up in the kitchen with a special recipe supplied by Rekha.

We signed up to the Great Australian Bird Count, a citizen science event organised by Bird Life Australia aiming to get a snapshot of bird populations in local areas. Students and educators took 20 minutes of each session to record the different bird species they could see in the yard. To name a couple children spotted, rainbow lorikeets, ibis, magpies and 2 Pacific Black Ducks who come to visit each morning. The data gathered helps researchers understand local bird populations, track changes over time, and inform conservation efforts.

Week 4 is all about Harry Potter and Halloween which we have combined into one themed week. The room has been decorated, our menu has been spookified and our activities have been planned to match. So far we’ve made cue tip skeletons & cotton ball ghosts, been turned into vampires and fairies with face painting and relaxed with story time. Still to come is a potion making class, Quidditch match, wand making, spooky treats in the Witch’s kitchen and scavenger hunt.
