Food Technology

The class completed their Food for Specific Needs Unit which allowed students to understand the dietary needs for a range of different groups and requirements. As part of the unit students had to justify and prepare a meal for a specific dietary requirement. All of the meals looked delicious including a pesto pasta with chickpeas for added protein, curries and salads for diabetics and a series of gluten free options. The class is now studying the Food in Australia Unit, experimenting with a range of Australia native bush foods including lemon myrtle, wattleseed and poppy seed.

Technology Mandatory

Students in Tech Mandatory have completed their food unit with the creation of their own marvellous muffins and packaging. Each student completed their own research to design and write their recipe. Everyone was excited to produce their muffin of choice. The class has since transitioned into the engineering unit and completed their balloon car prototypes and are well on their way to laser cutting their final dragster.

During Term 4, Stage 5 PDHPE students have been participating in the Sport Education in Physical Education Program (SEPEP), an engaging and student-centred approach to practical learning. SEPEP is designed to replicate the structure and excitement of a real sporting league, giving students ownership of their learning by placing them in key organisational and leadership roles within their teams.

Throughout the unit, students have taken on specific responsibilities such as coach, umpire, referee, equipment manager and team captain. These roles require students to collaboratively plan, communicate and manage different aspects of their weekly competition.

To create a sense of authenticity, teams were involved in selecting the sports featured in their round-robin competition. After discussions and voting, students chose to compete in basketball, slap hockey and volleyball. Each week, teams organise warm-ups, officiate games, manage scoring, and evaluate performance, mirroring the processes of real sporting organisations. This structure encourages students not only to participate as players but to contribute to the overall running and success of the league.

As the term progresses, students are demonstrating noticeable growth in their leadership, teamwork and organisational skills. Many students have shown increased confidence in guiding their peers, resolving conflicts, and making strategic decisions both on and off the court. The program has also highlighted the importance of fair play, communication, and responsibility, key qualities that extend far beyond the PDHPE classroom.

Overall, SEPEP has provided students with a highly engaging, hands-on learning experience that promotes collaboration, accountability and personal development. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by Stage 5 students this term has been outstanding, and we look forward to seeing their progress continue as the competition concludes.

Miss Porch.
