Infants and Primary

Infants

All classes have been busily getting on with the business of learning, making the most of the last few weeks of the school year. Teachers are working extra hard to complete assessments and reporting while still making learning fun and school a great place to be.

This week wraps up our Kindy-Start Transition for another year and we look forward to welcoming out newest students to full-time big school next year as they are such a great bunch who are excited about being here. Our Year 5 buddies have been awesome in assisting with the transition program, with each of them spending part of the day guiding activities and supporting our Kindy-start students. Our Year 5 students now know who their ‘buddy’ will be and have begun building strong and supportive friendships with them. Thank you to staff from across our school who have been a part of the transition and helped make this such a successful program.

Please continue to bring a BCS bucket hat to school each day – these are required each break time and for outside learning activities Hats are very much needed to protect from the hot sunny days we have been seeing lately. We have seen a bit improvement with this week, meaning most students are able to make the most of their play time.

Our Infants students have been getting into the spirit of Christmas early by making festive placemats for Meals on Wheels customers. Students have all designed a merry placement that will help brighten the Christmas of other people and have enjoyed the gift of giving. This has been a positive and thoughtful way to begin our Christmas activities.

This Friday our Year 1 and 2 students are excited to be taking part in a League-Tag Gala Day here in Boorowa. The NRL has organised the day for local young students to have a day of fun games while building great sports skills. We look forward to sharing photos of the day shortly.

Kindy/Year 1

Our classroom has been full of busy learning, with lots and lots of reading and writing practice. We have been enjoying imaginative stories including ‘Imagination’ by Alison Lester and ‘Perfect’ by Danny Parker. These stories use rhyme and onomatopoeia and we have been experimenting using these in our own imaginative writing pieces. This is clever work for K/1!

In Mathematics, we have been focusing on measurement and data. We have had fun exploring volume and seeing how many different shapes we can make with the same volume using interlocking cubes – way more than we predicted! K/1 have collected lots of data sets including local traffic, favourite foods and dice numbers, and have enjoyed predicting the likelihood of certain events – such as it was likely that the next vehicle passing by would be a ute, possible that it would be a truck, and impossible that it would be a train!

Cooking classes with Mrs Corcoran continue to be a highlight, with lots of happy pouring, mixing, stirring and tasting! This week we have made yummy crunchy choc-chip cookies.

Year 1/2

It’s been another wonderful few weeks of learning, creating, and celebrating in Year 1/2! Our classroom has been buzzing with excitement as we move into the final weeks of Term 4.

In English, we’ve been diving back into narrative writing, focusing on stories that include symbols and characters from well-known fairytales. Our current creative writing piece, Into the Forest, follows a character who meets familiar fairytale figures who try to lead them astray on their way to Grandma’s house! The students have produced some truly imaginative narratives.

In Maths, our curious learners have been exploring data collection and representation. Students designed their own surveys based on what they wondered about their classmates, such as favourite football teams, eye colours and animals. We are now learning how to collate this information into bar graphs, helping us understand how data can be organised visually.

We recently created beautiful Christmas placemat artworks for Meals on Wheels to use at their annual Christmas party. They turned out wonderfully and will certainly brighten people’s day! We’ve also officially begun our Christmas art, and the excitement is high for this subject each week!

Students have started learning touch typing, using an interactive program that teaches students where each letter is located on the keyboard and which finger is used for each key. We are already seeing some very speedy and accurate typists emerging!

Our recent Feather Celebration was a also a hit. Students celebrated in mufti, brought their teddy friends along, and enjoyed watching Under the Boardwalk. It was a great day, well earned through consistent positive choices.

We were lucky to have a session with Emma and Tara from the NRL, who taught us league tag skills to help prepare for the upcoming League Tag Gala Day at the showground on Friday, 21st November. Students are very excited to play a few league tag games and can’t wait to see Emma and Tara again!

In Cooking, we learned how to make fresh rice paper rolls, packed with colourful vegetables. It was fantastic to see students trying, and loving so many healthy ingredients. Ms Wood may have even found a new favourite lunch!

Behaviour expectations in 1/2

As we move toward the end of term, we still have plenty of learning ahead. Students have been receiving a few reminders about using self-control during class time, especially when contributing to discussions. And a few reminders to keep hands feet and objects to self in the playground. We are continuing to encourage:

  • Raising hands before speaking
  • Respectful listening when others are sharing
  • Inclusiveness and kindness towards everyone!
  • Using calm, safe bodies during transitions and activities

We appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations at home, helping us finish the term positively and strongly together.

Ms Wood

Friendship Session: Our Years 4, 5 & 6 girls recently participated in a Friendship Workshop. Thank you to Mrs Horne for supporting and running this session alongside Miss McIntosh. The girls engaged in meaningful discussions about the positive and negative qualities in friendships and confidently identified strategies to manage challenging relationships.

This was a fantastic session using principles from the Respectful Relationships Education program and the PDHPE curriculum, helping students build the skills to develop healthy and supportive friendships.
