Music

Our students have been learning about the percussion family and we recently had a visit by Kaboom Percussion showing us how to make instruments out of recycled materials. One of our students, Avish, was so inspired he went home and made his own set of instruments from recycled goods at home! Some students were invited up to participate!

Last week the string ensemble performed at assembly. Their performance was AMAZING! Here is the clip to watch:

Ellen José Student Reconciliation Awards

The Ellen José Student Reconciliation Awards honour the life of Torres Strait Elder Ellen José (1951 - 2017). Ellen was a pioneer in Australia's urban Indigenous art movement and a radical activist and social justice campaigner. Her contribution to the arts and Bayside was outstanding and inspirational in raising awareness of reconciliation.

Established in 2018, the Ellen José Student Reconciliation Awards are aimed at Bayside primary and secondary school students, bringing awareness of reconciliation to our young people, who are the future of Australia, through art and writing. Entrants are asked to interpret "As a young person, what does reconciliation mean to you?" in their artwork or writing piece.

LOTE

Asian or Chinese Music/Art Incursions have been running for our students for the third consecutive year, among incursions of Chinese food making and tasting,a tea ceremony and Martial Arts workshops.

Incursions are always run aligning with the Year Level subject content. We usually give year 5-6 students one term to learn, explore and research cultural subjects.

Learning a language is crucial when you need to learn a different culture, but it is also so challenging that it can turn into a barrier. Arts, music and other cultural forms creates a visible and audible example of that culture. For the last 3 years students have found the arts and music workshop enjoyable and memorable.

This term, we are very lucky to have Asian musicians from Musica Viva to run an interactive performance for our Year 5 and 6 students – they only tour in Melbourne for one week.

The Asian Music performance Life is An Echo displayed Guzheng and Erhu, two of the oldest Chinese instruments. It led students to discover how to create space for and between themselves through music. It taught students to converse and cooperate with each other through music.
