Dear Families

These past couple of weeks have marked the halfway point of our Year 12 students’ final year. The return to school this week to receive examination results and feedback will have been one of mixed emotions: for some, pride and joy in their efforts and resulting achievements, but for others, disappointment that they didn’t do as well as they had anticipated or hoped. The next few months are critical for our Year 12s to persevere, stay motivated and enjoy their final stretch of their senior years’ journey, and the following suggestions may assist to keep focus, motivation and a sense of perspective:

Year 12 is not just about the final results but also about personal growth, resilience, relationships and the invaluable experiences along the way, and we encourage our Year 12s to celebrate achievements, embrace challenges and enjoy upcoming events such as the Interhouse Athletics Carnival and John XXIII Day to finish the year with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Year 11 students returned from examinations on Tuesday to engage in a meaningful and powerful day Id Quod Volo: That which I desire in my deepest and truest self. At John XXlll College we aspire to develop leaders who have a strong sense of servant leadership that is Christ Centered. A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and wellbeing of people and the communities to which they belong. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the 'top of the pyramid,' servant leadership is different. The servant leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. Drawing on inspiration from Christ and our College founders, Year 11 students spent the day exploring ways in which they can develop their skills as servant leaders. Guest presenter Damian Martin, ex-Perth Wildcats captain, addressed students on leadership experiences, teamwork and overcoming adversity. In the afternoon, students engaged in community service activities related to our commitment to sustainability and being ‘people for others’ with their House groups. Thank you to Mr Liam Smith, Assistant Deputy Principal – Year 11, House Coordinators and Homeroom Teachers for organising and working alongside students on this very important day in their Year 11 journey.

Our World Scholars delivered an outstanding performance at the Perth Regional Round of the World Scholars Cup last weekend! Almost 500 students took part in the two-day competition which tested student academic knowledge, critical thinking and creativity across a number of disciplines. Special mention to Rose McLoughlin (Year 8), who was announced runner-up Champion Scholar and Jonah Liew (Year 9), who ranked in the top 10 for all the challenges.

Congratulations to our talented musicians who performed yesterday at Mercy Village, providing an afternoon of beautiful performances for the residents. Also, to our public speaking grand finalists who impressed the audience with their engaging and informative speeches last night. Wishing Year 10 students all the best as they continue with their examinations next week.

2024 HASS Week

Throughout Week 16, the HASS Learning Area conducted a range of fun and engaging activities and events to celebrate the Humanities and Social Sciences subjects of Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography and History. The week has coincided with events being held across Australia, as part of National Reconciliation Week. In Year 7 and 9 HASS classes, students were given the opportunity to create a ‘Sea of Hands’ as part of the students taking part in a ‘deep dive’ into First Nations Reconciliation, and the theme for this year was 'Now More Than Ever'. These ‘Hands’ have long become a symbol of community support for reconciliation, rights and respect.

During lunchtimes, students had the opportunity to partake in a documentary screening, a famous leaders challenge, an Amazing Race and an Indigenous Communities of the World quiz. The week culminated in the annual HASS Week BBQ, where students enjoyed a sausage sizzle and drink at lunchtime, with part proceeds going to Caritas. Thank you must go to all students who actively participated throughout the week and staff for their organisation of these activities and events.
