Faith and Mission

John XXIII College is delighted to invite you to a community event. On Tuesday 16 July 2024, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, Fr Frank Brennan SJ will explore the concept of a synodal church: a church that listens, dialogues, and journeys together. This event, held at the Thomas More Exhibition Centre on John XXIII Avenue, Mount Claremont, is free, but registration is essential at www.trybooking.com/1229490.

Pope Francis describes us as a Church on the move, facing challenges in seeing the path ahead clearly. Synodality calls for us to place our confidence in God as we discern our path of service in today’s world. The Synod on Synodality aims to create a more inclusive and participatory church by fostering dialogue and collaboration among all its members, including those often marginalised. Key discussion points will include how synodality can help the church navigate modern social, cultural, and political challenges, and the importance of involving all members in decision-making processes.

Fr Frank Brennan SJ, renowned for his work in human rights and social justice, will lead this engaging evening. With a distinguished career, including roles in the National Human Rights Consultation and the Religious Freedom Review panel and accolades such as the Order of Australia, Fr Brennan brings a wealth of experience and insight.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn and engage with Fr Brennan on the future of a synodal church!

Community Mass

Thank you to Year 12 students who prepared and participated in our Eucharist this morning, where we celebrated the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The first reading was from the letter to the Ephesians, which includes the beautiful prayer of Saint Paul for Christians living in Ephesus. However, we could make this a prayer for those we love and care for, and perhaps even ourselves:

This then is what I pray, kneeling before the Father, from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes its name:

Out of God’s infinite glory,

may God give you the power through the Spirit

for your hidden self to grow strong,

so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith,

and then, planted in love and built on love,

you will, with all the saints, have strength to grasp

the breadth and the length, the height and the depth;

until, knowing the love of Christ,

which is beyond all knowledge,

you are filled with the utter fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:14-19

Next week, our Community Mass will be prepared by Year 11 Pilgrimage students. All families are warmly invited to attend this Eucharist. Those able to stay are welcome to gather for coffee afterwards in the Circle of Friends Café.
