Child Safety Week
Child Safety Week is a campaign supported by the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia and promoted widely internationally by the Child Accident Prevention Trust of the UK. Child Safety Week is intended to instigate conversations around child safety and spread awareness of how parents, carers and educators can prevent accidents through proactive dialogue and promoting awareness through activities. The campaign focuses on educating children on different approaches to accident prevention and how they can keep themselves safe. National Kidsafe Day is also featured later in in the year across Australia.
How Child Safety Week can help parents, educators and children
The main purpose is to prevent the number of accidents to children; one of the leading causes of children’s death behind cancer. Although, as a society, we recognise that children need to experiment and take risks in order to learn, we also strive to impart practical knowledge, solutions and strategies to minimise risks and accidents in common circumstances, such as on the roads, online and at home.
How will St Joseph's School acknowledge Child Safety Week?
At St Joseph's School, to commemorate Child Safety Week and to continue promoting Child Safe Practices through student awareness, staff and students will this week get involved by including the children in lessons about how to keep themselves safe through a variety of activities:
(1) To increase their understanding and awareness surrounding various aspects of accident prevention and child safety
Accident Prevention Areas of Focus :
PREP - General Safety in and around the Home
YR 1/2 - Chemicals and Poisons Safety
YR 3/4 - Medicines Safety
YR 5/6 - Drug Awareness
(2) To help them identify their FIVE TRUSTED ADULTS that can help them when they feel unsure, uncomfortable or unsafe.
