Learning and Teaching

Dear Parents,

As the end of term is approaching quickly, it is also the term you will receive your child’s school report that paints a picture of their growth this semester. During the term, teachers have been teaching and assessing students on an ongoing basis so they have adequate data to report to the Victorian Curriculum. Reports will be live online on Monday 17th June.

Today in the School Advisory Council, we shared the skills that form the foundation of literacy with Scarborough's Reading Rope. Developed by Dr. Hollis Scarborough, this conceptual framework provides a comprehensive map of the journey towards proficient reading.

The Reading Rope illustrates two key strands - the "Word Recognition Strand" and the "Language Comprehension Strand." These intertwining components encompass a range of skills crucial for reading proficiency.

🔤 Word Recognition Strand: This strand focuses on decoding and sight recognition skills essential for fluent reading. From phonological awareness to decoding abilities, each component contributes to unlocking the world of written language.

📖 Language Comprehension Strand: Beyond decoding, understanding language is paramount. This strand encompasses vocabulary knowledge, background knowledge, and comprehension strategies vital for making meaning from text.

🧩 Interconnectedness: What makes Scarborough's Reading Rope truly powerful is its recognition of the interconnected nature of these skills. Proficient reading relies on a delicate balance between word recognition and language comprehension abilities, with each strand reinforcing the other.

Let's continue to embark on this journey together, weaving a tapestry of literacy proficiency one strand at a time.

Have a great week.

Kind regards

Megan
