Classroom Happenings Year 5/6

5/6 Excursion to the Sandridge Bridge and Immigration Museum

Last Wednesday all of the Year 5 and 6s went on an excursion into the city to visit the Immigration Museum and the Sandridge Immigration Bridge as part of our Inquiry unit “Australia: Building a Nation”.

On the Sandridge Bridge there was a series of glass panels that represented the people and countries from all over the world that have migrated to Australia. They told us how many people from their country had immigrated here as well as how many were living in Australia. The panels also told us the reasons why they had migrated to Australia including: to join the gold rush, become agricultural workers, use their skills as builders, flee wars and communism, as wives, rural workers, cane cutters, pearl divers, students, camel drivers, coal miners, domestic workers and some came simply for a better life!!

We also went to the Immigration Museum where we learnt more about people who have migrated to Australia.

There were 3 different exhibitions in the museum that we visited: “Getting In”, “Voices Across Time” and “Leaving Home”.
