PHONICS IN FOUNDATION 🔤

Our Foundation students have begun their exciting phonics journey — a vital first step in learning to read and write!

This term, we’re focusing on introducing single sounds (phonemes) that form the building blocks of words. The children are learning to see, hear, and say these sounds, building confidence as they begin to blend them into simple words. You might hear your child talking about sounds like /s/, /a/, /t/, /p/, /i/, and /n/ — these are some of the first sounds we explore.

The students are discovering that letters represent sounds, and those sounds work together to make words. It’s a magical moment when they realise they can sound out words like "sat," "pin," or "tap" all by themselves!

HANDWRITING ✏️

This week in Foundation, we’ve been working hard on developing our handwriting skills by learning how to form letters correctly. To support this, we use simple mnemonics — fun little phrases that help the children remember the correct movements for each letter.

Our focus this week was the letter 'i'. Students practiced forming it by remembering:

👉 "Short stick, flick, dot!"
