It has been a busy and productive couple of weeks for the Careers and Pathways Team, with a strong focus on supporting students to make informed decisions about their future pathways. Below is an update on some of the key initiatives taking place this term.

Subject Selection

Term 3 is an important time for students as they make their subject selections for 2027. While this may seem early, it gives our timetabling team sufficient time to develop the timetable, create classes and allocate appropriate staffing for the year ahead.

This term, all Year 9 and 10 students participated in individual subject selection appointments with a member of the Careers and Pathways Team or School Leadership. These conversations gave students the opportunity to discuss their interests, strengths and future aspirations, and to explore the subjects and pathways that will best support their goals — including any prerequisites or recommended subjects for their intended senior school and post-school pathways. It was fantastic to see so many parents attending these appointments and engaging in these important conversations alongside their children.

This week, information was also distributed to Year 7 and 8 students regarding subject selection for 2027. As part of our ongoing review of the junior secondary curriculum, we have made some changes to our Year 8 and 9 programs: Humanities and Science will now continue as core subjects through to Year 9, rather than being delivered through an elective-based model. This change ensures all students develop a broad range of knowledge and skills — and gain greater exposure to different areas of learning — before making more specialised choices in the senior years.

Subject selections for Year 7 and 8 students are due by 9:00am on Monday 17 August.

VTAC Applications

This is also an important time for our Year 12 students, who are beginning the process of applying for further study in 2027 through VTAC.

On Wednesday 5 August, all Year 12 students were supported to create their VTAC accounts and complete the initial application set-up. The Careers and Pathways Team will continue to support students throughout the process, including course research, preference selection, and understanding the requirements and timelines involved.

We encourage students to research their options carefully and to seek advice from the Careers and Pathways Team if they are unsure about any aspect of the process. Students and parents should also refer to Ms Egan's post on the Compass Newsfeed, which includes helpful resources, key dates and important deadlines.

Work Experience

We strongly encourage all Year 10 students to undertake a work experience placement this year. Work experience gives students the chance to step into a workplace, gain a real understanding of what a career involves and, importantly, determine whether it's the right fit for them. It also builds workplace skills and confidence and supports more informed subject and pathway decisions.

To participate, students need to:

  • Find and confirm a suitable work experience placement

  • Complete the required Safe at Work certificate

  • Complete and submit all required school and employer paperwork

All relevant information — including the student presentation, required paperwork and links to the Safe at Work certificate — is available on the Careers and Pathways website. We encourage students and families to plan their placement as early as possible to secure a position in an area that interests them.
