Being Well at Magill

Hello Magill Families,
Welcome to Week 8's Wellbeing instalment as we continue sharing helpful resources from URSTRONG about the Language of Friendship. This week, we're focusing on Sessions 6 and 7: ‘Standing up to Mean-on-Purpose Behaviour’ and ‘Dealing with an Unhealthy Friendship’.
Session 6: ‘Standing up to Mean-on-Purpose Behaviour’
Key Outcome
Your child will learn to stand up to Mean-on-Purpose behaviour by using a Quick Comeback.
Objective
This session helps kids recognise the difference between normal conflict (we call Friendship Fires®) and Mean-on-Purpose behaviour. The word “bullying” is so often misused, confusing for kids, and leads them to label other children as “bullies”. Instead, our program focuses on addressing behaviour that is intentionally mean (we call Mean-on-Purpose) using a Quick Comeback. This short statement, said in a strong voice (not aggressive!), lets the other person know their Mean-on-Purpose behaviour is not okay. Children are then taught to walk away and report the situation to an adult.
Session 7: ‘Dealing with an Unhealthy Friendship’
Key Outcome
Your child will learn strategies to help improve an unhealthy friendship.
Objective
This session is focused on helping children take a strategic approach to an unhealthy friendship or relationship to ultimately get the friendship feeling healthy again. Practical strategies are applied to think about the friendship objectively, focusing on the positive qualities in the friendship.
Best wishes,
